Wow!!! This is an old thread and it's still being replied to. I've been gassin' for a jazz bass for a while now, and I'm thinkin' it just might be the VM '77 Jazz for me. Love the black-on-black look, and the maple fretboard just looks sooo sexy, and I've always prefered Jazz basses with maple boards anyway. Once I decide to make one mine, I'll be posting again, asking for my number. I agree with others here. I have A/B'd these against the MIM Fenders, and the Squire VM's are every bit as good, or better.
I played one of these last week. I've played several of the other VM Js (natural wood finish) and dug them, but this '77 VM was the business.
I don't even play Js, but it was hard to put this one down.

Can be quite variable. Some places will check the weight for you for what they have in stock. Obviously GC, M123 and others can't. Sweetwater won't for the price point. Elderly has been real cool about checking weights for me.
Just got covers for my VM Jazz, now it looks complete! Just like the 70's Jazz basses that turned me onto Fenders in the first place back when I started playing:

does anyone know if putting a SD quarter pounder into a VM P makes much difference over the standard duncan designed pup?
I'd like to know what the 1/4 pounder sounds like just for knowing.
I like the total tone pallet/capacity of the DD's and I can't imagine the sound getting any better than they already are: Hot & Cold and all the spaces in between.

I agree, I like the sound of the DD pickups, too. I see no need for me to swap them out. Of course, that's purely my personal preference.
I am a tinkerer, and have changed pickups in many of the basses I have owned. I kind of wanted to change the ones in the amber VMP I have, but then I thought "Why? Just to change them? Is there anything you don't like about the DDs that came in it?".
Can't think of a reason to change them. I did change the bridge to one of the HiMass ones from a 50s CV and I put the Hipshot Ultralight tuners on, but the main reason for those changes was to alter the balance a little and help with the neck dive issues, not because there was anything wrong with the stock bridge or tuners.

You may well have struck a nerve there with me about the CVs too.
I think I didn't like the very much rounder more-radiused neck - I felt as though I was gonna fall off the edges to get a G or an E string - but maybe it was the weight of the neck too.
As I remember it - the CVs had a pretty nasty head dive and of course this was on my 'testing' strap that I have in my car when I go to GC every time.
If I had gotten it home and put a real leather strap on it, it might've turned out better.

Don't the CVs and VMs both have 9 1/2" radius fingerboards?
Or are you referring to the profile of the neck itself rather than the fingerboard?
I have a CV Olympic White / Tort Jazz and it seems to have less neck dive stock than the VMP did when it was stock, although the VMP is now perfectly balanced after the mods.
I think the Jazz's body is heavier and the Jazz's slim neck is lighter, that probably helps with the balance.
