Yeah, before I bought one, I e-mailed Fender's consumer relations about it, as a lot of people were making that claim that they were painted on, and I was told by Jeff Krause, a Fender rep, that they were real. Then, when I actually got the thing in my hands, I went over it with magnifying glasses (an Optivisor) and I could see minute gaps that required filling along the edges of some of the blocks. If anyone tells you they're painted on, they are full of it and are just repeating unsubstantiated internet rumors. As I said, I've personally observed this on my own close up insection, and have gotten official confirmation from Fender. You can take it to the bank they are real.

Yes I meant the VM. Fantastic news that they are not painted on. I'm really GAS:ing for one now :)

I played a black on black VM Jazz with the pearloid block inlays on a maple-board neck the other day.

I'm not a big Jazz bass guy, but it was one sweet little machine. If those inlays aren't real, they'll do, because I sure couldn't tell they weren't. (Sounds like they are real from this discussion.) The neck on this bass was killer!

Nah - somebody's gotta put the filler around the inlays and NO CNC machine is gonna do that - so I think there IS some handcrafting involved.

Which is exactly what happened on mine. On close inspection, you could plainly see where the router had got a little carried away and the resultant gap had to be filled. Whoever did it, did a nice job color matching because you could only tell under lighted magnification it was there.

I purchased my Squier Vintage Fretless, in September 2010. Still in shock at the great tone, balance, and playability of this bass. Incredible deal, and such a joy to play! Amazing tone for $350!
