Some are split - some aren't.

Yes, these will interchange with Squier-to-Fender and vice versa. I have and use both and they are for all intents and purposes to me, pretty much the same - but not really.

Obtuse statement there - but really; 'pots' is a very generic term unless you affix a prefix on it in the form of Fender or CTS - or even AllParts (which are mostly Chinese even though they state they are US-quality).

About the latter, I have an interesting anecdote or two.

Admittedly - they can and do fail, but I don't see it as just a Squier-thing at all. I'd change them too - if or when they fail. So far I've been very fortunate I guess.

I have one of the Gretsch Electromatic hollowbody basses that everyone is raging over, and the pots (the exact same ones they put in Squiers) are bad. Whenever you turn either volume knob all the way down, the bass shuts off completely. No scratchiness or anything, just a complete malfunction.

Thankfully, my bass is still under the 1 year warranty for pots and hardware (lifetime on the body). I'll be taking her in to GC on Monday for service.

So, It's not just Squier. It's everything that Fender puts these cheap ass pots in.

Even if I had to pay out of pocket to fix it, it's only $20 - $25 for the repair.

Well like I've been saying here lately, my next bass will likely be a Squier. A trip to GC with a coupon for $30 off $199, or more and the $10 coupon for taking their online survey got me $40 off this;

Once again, it came on a day where I'm teaching after the day job, so I won't be able to give it a serious sitdown until late tonight. The fretwork on the one I returned was better, but that doesn't help much when the neck was fruited.

My plans for now are to keep it stock for a while. I may look at blacking it out with bridge/tuners/control plate and knobs, but that's something to think about down the road. If the pots flake, I'll just put together a new control plate with the wire kit from bass parts resource and drop that in (with some dremeling to make it all fit..), but I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

Hopefully I'll get to snap some better pics of it in a more exciting environment, right now it's hanging out in a cubical. :hmm:

Ah yes, A VM-Jazz in stock trim. I remember when mine was that way not so long ago.

About the fret wires - I ran a 10" file down both sides of the neck - although I didn't have any standing proud - just to round them off a bit.

The good thing is that filing on the binding won't be a problem since the binding kinda self-heals and won't show any marks if you are gentle.

My new to me VM jazz natural will be here next week. I'm thinking the black hardware looks so nice on them, what with the blocks and binding.

I like the brass saddles, matches the natural maple.

I have proper black jazz knobs ordered. I have a set of black JinHo machines lying around I might put on, but I swapped the elephant ear pegs from them onto my Epi Bird, so I have the MODERN wingnut pegs which would look crap. Get some black wilkinsons maybe? Will they fit?

Personally I think a HM of any brand is gonna muck up the voice of this bass.

Not sure about the pickup cover, I feel it may just be in the way for me. Never played with one, I do like the look though. I definitely like the ashtray but with the gap problem as stated in previous posts, I'll probably pass. Thanks guys!

I dig the brass saddles on that Wilkinson. High mass... well Leo 'perfected' the electric bass in the 50's and they had tinfoil bridges Ha ha. Worked for all the dudes before Quann opened things up. I might look around for a high mass that I like, but not Badass II, too long looking for my taste.

I certainly don't want to waltz through the HM minefield again - but the Quann really moved the freq response to the more modern sounds by denying the lows the opportunity to stay with the strings and just conducts them to the wood 'black hole' of the body - sounds I do not personally like nor have a need for.

I like my bass to be low and dirty, not high, shrill and glass-breaking capable so I therefor eschew the HM bridges.
