So which one is better right out of the store, the Squier Vintage Modified series of basses, or the Squier Classic Vibe series of basses? In terms of playability, sound, quality, and personal thoughts.

Squier Vintage Modified or Squier Classic Vibe series?

While they are probably both of equal quality/playability, I voted for the VM because I have one and I really dig the 75 RI vibe.
I think in this instance it's going to be a comparison between each bass. There are good and bad ones of each model out there.
I have been hearing tons about the VV, they are supposedly amazing. They look nice too!
They are just bought this guy this afternoon... best bass I've ever seen/played for under $300...
I'm going to say the VM series. I own a VM P-bass, and I'm going to be getting a VM Jazz here real soon. I can only say good things about the P bass.
I tried a VV Jazz and a 60's p at GC the other day, and I must say they were very nice. Great sound out of both. But I can not say I liked the neck finish. Of course I got home and sanded off the finish on my P bass, and my other basses have a sanded down neck. So maybe I'm biased.

I didn't play a VM yet, but have a CV which is an amazing bass.
I say collect one of each.

My VM fretless is hella nice. I going to GC this weekend to try a few things. Perhaps I will try that 50's P while I am there. That thing is gorgeous!
Having owned both at the same time (but now I've sold my Vintage Modified fretless), I can say in my opinion, that the Classic Vibe jazz is a little bit ahead in terms of tone, fit and finish and playability. Both great basses but to me, the Classic Vibe is definitely better.

You hit something there. I was thinking of picking up another VM Jazz and a CV or two and let them sit. Make a couple of NOS out of them by never even opening the package.....then 20 years down the road.....
What's the worst that could happen? I have a few extra really cool NOS basses!

I spent several hours last night at a local music store making this comparison.
Squier '60s Classic Vibe Precision: This thing is awesome. When a/b'ed with several brand new MIA Precisions in the store, the Squier seemed tonally superior! (Same head, same cabinet, same settings, same riffs.) A little more mid-range definition and thump. The MIM and Highway 1 didn't even compare.
Squier '60s Classic Vibe Jazz: Not as impressive as the Precision. When a/b'ed with a few MIA Jazzes, it was clear the Squier had a brittle, shrill quality about its high end, whereas the MIA was a much more characteristic "round" tone.
It was a no-brainer. I left with the Squier Precision. I'm pretty excited I'm now going gig the crap out of a $300 bass...

I just bought a Vintage Modified fretless about two weeks ago and I was shocked at the quality (Fit and finish) of this Bass for 279.00 bucks. I just bought a new Cirrus also and the squire is close to it in fit and finish. I'm still shocked about this Squire!! I'm going to buy a SR series Ibanez in the next week and hope it is as good as my Vintage Modified fretless. Good Luck on your choice.

I wonder about the VM body wood, is it really agathis? I read it was "soft maple", is it the same thing?

It depends... what are you looking for.
Precision or jazz bass?
And what kind of tone are you after?
I can only speak for the precision basses myself, I tried all four of them.
IMO I rate them in this order as the best (to my taste):
1- Classic Vibe 50s precision bass (agressive, sharp tone)
2- Classic Vibe 60s precision bass (very sweet voiced)
3- Vintage Modified Telecaster precision bass (nice dark sound, yet well defined)
4- Vintage Modified (70s styling) precision bass (not bad, but IMO and IME not that much better as an Affinity, although it looks better to me.)
Your mileage may vary.
I don't know about the jazz basses, but if they offer about the same range of sound as the precision basses I'd say there is definately one Squier for each ones individual taste.

But there are a lot of people here that have VM or CV jazz basses that can guide you.
