Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass PJ questions please .

For $299.00 I was thinking of getting one , like to hear about them if you have any experience with it please , will the P pickup pretty much sound like a P bass would if you roll the Jazz off , didn't know if it was placed in a different position in the body than a P only bass ? My only experience was picking up a P bass at a store (USA model) and the neck seemed like a ball bat to me , will these have a little smaller neck ? Currently using a Peavey Millinium bass , but love the look of this one a lot more , lets hear what ya think of these . Thanks :)

Only the Vintage Modified Fretless. I bought one last year-plays, sounds and looks great. Highly recommended if you are in the market for a fretless.

I have a long scale Squier VM Jaguar bass with the PJ pickups. I also have a Fender Precision. I think it sounds pretty convincingly like a Fender P with only the P pickup on. It does not have the sustain of the heavy Fender body, though.

I also just plug it and played it, 'cause I didn't remember any buzzing from the J pickup. Mine does not buzz. So, that may be hit-or-miss with how well that particular unit is grounded. I do have an SX 5-string fretless with J pups; and it definitely hums with only one of the pups on.

Regarding playability: I was in GC to get a Fender Jazz. I had the CFO's prior approval for the Fender. I played every Fender Jazz in the place MIA, MIM, and Squier. This Squier VM Jag played just as good as the Fenders. What put it over the top for me was active bass boost. Walked out happy for less than half the price; and I'm still happy with it.

The only ding I would give it is that I don't think the tuners feel as solid as the Fender. I am used to pretty stiff resistance on my P. They work just fine; just feel kinda soft.

In my experience...yes and no.

It's more of a crapshoot than anything. I had 2 VM Squier Jazzes that would not take a Jazz-sized replacement neck (wanted something with better fretwork), the neck pocket was not the right size at all. However every single Squier Classic Vibe bass has encountered no issues with Fender Replacement necks (jazz sized). Idk if it's a VM vs CV thing, but I personally wouldn't both with the VM. If you just want a good P bass but don't want to pay for a MIM Fender, the VM you are looking at would be good or I'd get a CV P-bass and get a replacement Jazz-sized neck.

I have the VM precision [PJ] in the LPB finish with GHS flats .
It's a good serviceable bass that sounds great out of the box.
My only problem thus far was the G string saddle falling down on the job.
Cranked it back up and put some clear nail polish on the screw.
Gigging it tomorrow night. For $299 you cannot lose.

After trying several VM's and CV's, I thought that overall, the CV basses were a bit better. There were more issues with the VM's, like in some cases what seemed like lesser-quality pickups and tuners and fret ends that were not rounded and were often times sharp. The VM's might have had more options like P/J and more colors but the CV's in my opinion were/are a tad better.
