Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass PJ questions please .

I just bought a Lake Placid blue VM pj a couple weeks ago. Was at Sam Ash trading in a Schecter C4. Amazed! I played the MIA's, MIM's and this one I brought home. As it sat, it played/sounded better than both on the wall The VM was a floor model. The MIA was way overpriced for me at 1300 and I wouldn't pay 600 for an MIM playing crappy like these did. I was that blown away by it. $255 with 15% off and 175 for the Schecter, too easy. Awesome through my new Rumble 500. Just sent back a Squire J bass in white to Zzounds. Too heavy for me. Nice though, another nice player after a truss tweak. As said, the J pup is a little noisy. I plan to upgrade that myself but, it still sounds really good for what it is. One of the good ones I guess.

Agreed about the J pup. Noisy and weak on mine, although it does add that nice little bit of phasing in tandem with the split coil. I never turn to the J pup on its own, which is a shame because it would add a lot of value to the instrument if it were usable.
standard warning on these... the neck plate screws are cast crap, replace with high quality steel.
you gotta monkey with the PUs and they have their quality limits, swapouts are suggested, but for goofing around they suffice if you twiddle the knobs a bit. mine @ $150 is getting plenty of increased love, yet I've got others in that price range that beat it and for $300 you can do better.

well, I picked my VM PJ up for $150 slightly used in good shape (from the outside.) took it to one rehearsal and the j pickup quit working. took everything apart and the J pickup pretty much fell apart. I wasn't too concerned as I was going to and have since put the EMG Geezer Butler set in. wow. what a great sounding bass. one of the neck screws snapped on me last night so I have a set of stainless screws on the way. put different tuners and a d-tuner on it and it is now my main bass.
I have been a fan of Squiers for some time. they are an excellent mod platform.
Find a used LTD Vintage 214, 204 or even an AP204...Blows the doors off the Squiers!!! I own both and the LTD Vintage sounds better and is built better IMHO
LOL with these I get the debate over a bass being gig-worthy! I got mine strictly for modding to extremes if needed, but I'm happy with it as is. I'm shocked tho at the whole PU situation being SO shoddy, yet I'm in no rush to swap out since I'm not gigging, but hearing your Geezer upgrade makes my day and I'm still waiting for 9am so I can really plug in. it's really lightweight, comfortable, just a sweet streamlined classic P with a noisy J, and I admit I wish it said Fender, maybe they should too.
Agreed that LTD might have better QC than Squier, but those discontinued basses could be difficult to find, whereas I can buy a VM P-bass at the lemonade stand down the street for cheap and mod the crap out of it. Anymore, I feel like the Squiers are put together better than the MIM stuff, just wish they said Fender on the headstock so I could be taken seriously when I play mine.
Ill agree to that. I played several MIM before I decided on this one. Slight tweak of the neck, perfect! Other than the noise I really can't complain about the pickups much. Sounds great with fresh strings through my rig, has the correct sound and feel if you will for a fender style bass. But I just found a T40 at the local pawn shop, so it might have to go if I can wheel and deal...
Squiers are poorly shielded for sure, but not the worst out there. I just see it as an opportunity to learn how to do my own cavity shielding. lol Those T40s are gaining popularity again, maybe it's time for a reissue?
