Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

Subbed, since I've got one on the way. I've flirted with 5s in the past but never had one take; this is too cheap to not try again though.

Plan: reverse-P pickguard, see about moving the rear strap peg (^ per @steve_rolfeca), maybe a different string retainer set-up. I also scored an extra pickup for cheap, which I may add in the future for a double-reverse P config.

I bought a red one for $215 shipped to my door. I used it on a recording and played it at a few gigs. The recorded sound was huge. That's mainly why I bought it. Put some D'Addario Chromes on it since the store was out of Ernie Ball flats and boom.....P bass out the ying yang! Maybe there s a better deal out there but I ain't seen it. It's heavier than my gig basses but no so heavy that I won' t use it live. The stock pups are capable of delivering my tone but I may try something different if I can find some pups that will fit without routing. I may also replace the bridge. Not sure if that's necessary but time will tell.

I'm reviving this to ask a question of the modders of this Bass. I now have an Oly white one in my possession and really dig it! However, the pickups are leaving a bit to be desired. I'm seriously looking at the seymour duncan antiquity II pups in the 5 string variety since it doesn't look like Joe Barden is going to make a Pbass 5 pup any time soon :/ Does anyone have any experience with the antiquity 2's? I'm playing through 2 15's and am addicted to that old motown 70's vibe.

I can't get enough of this neck...

Nordstrand NP5F regular or vintage wind. PM me for more details if you wish. I have experience with both.

I don't know if you guys are following the news about the release of Nordstrands Alnico III pickups, but I'm planning on trying a set in this bass once it arrives. The model that will fit this bass is called the NP5FV a3. It's got a sweeter smoother top end, especially compared to the standard NP5F (which until recently) has only been available in Alnico 5. The "V" denotes "vintage" wind which is smoother in the top end compared to the Alnico 5. They are priced at $131.00 I'll post a review for those interested.

I'd love to see a review, and sound clips would be even better, just the bass direct into an audio interface, no post-processing or amp sims.

Funny, people use terms like warm or buttery to describe vintage Fenders, but I never found them that way. I remember my '64 P-bass as being a little light on the low E, hollow mids, and a bright, relatively open top end. The kind of tone that doesn't sound great solo'd, but works really well with the way most sound people mix bass.

I've never auditioned a Nordy P5, but the regular P4 doesn't sound vintage to me. More like "vintage improved"- smoother, more even, and a little rounder in the bottom end than a real 60's Precision. Not necessarily better or worse, but certainly a little different.

Regardless, i like the Fender Am Std pickup in my Oly VMP5, but it doesn't rev me up the way the pickup in an AVRI '62 four-banger does.

It would be nice if the new Nordy's turned out to be the magic sauce that completed my P5.

Delano makes one that fits and of course there are Bart's. I like Delano pups so I may try them . $155 at Best Bass Gear. They also carry most all the others mentioned here. Thumper, I bought it in the Talkbass classifieds.

Aaaand I'm in.

This neck is a big 'un. Still, in fifteen minutes of right-out-of-the-box playing, I was able to adapt surprisingly fast. And only 8lbs., if the scale is to be believed.

I don't have a micrometer, but mine measures almost right at 1 7/8" at the nut? As takeout said, thickness is pretty slim. I've had narrower 5'er necks, but like this width as well if not better, and I'm 5'8" w/fairly small hands.....nos problemos!. I've also been a fan of satin necks, but this gloss is hard, and does not seem sticky at all (unlike some other gloss necks I've played).

1 7/8 is standard for Fender V. Cool I'm comfy with that. How well is the nut cut? Is there a lot of pressure to fret the B at the first fret?

Mine is really low at the nut. That said, a needle file set and a little patience will solve the issue. Or as part of a professional setup.
I too have smallish hands this neck is very comfotable. It is my go to player for practice and shows.
