Squier VM Jazz Bass or Jaguar HB?

I've saving up to buy a new back up. I've only got a P bass and a P/J so I am searching for a bass that is a bit different. I've narrowed it down to these 2 basses. I like the tone of jazz basses but I have no idea how the jag sounds (I assume that it sounds a bit stingrayish, but I could be wrong).

Yesterday I visited the music shop, where it was very quiet because of hollidays. I hed the chance of trying out many basses. I went through a complete range of Fenders and Squiers. In general the Jaguars didn't give me that fundamental bass sound. The Jazz types are more conservative. But, if I had the money and had to buy a Squier, it wouuld certainly be a Precision type, preferably with both elements (P and J) fitted.

You've really got to play them both to know which you're going to like better. I've not played the Jag HB, but based on the HB pickup placement, I'd almost guarantee that it's going to have a Stingray-ish vibe to it and sound more aggressive than the Jazz.

That all being said, you have a P and a PJ, so if you're looking for something that sounds different, the Jag HB would probably be the way to go. You're going to have to play them both and do a side by side comparison to know which you'll like better though. It's the weekend, so that should give you some time to get to a music store and try them. They're Squiers, so unless you live way out in BFE, it's not like they're difficult to find.

I bought my VM Jazz last month after trying both, the Jazz has the better range of sounds than the Jag but I still want one, as it has been said before the HB Jag has a very Stingray sound and very bright sound almost to aggresive and I've heard from many bassists that it can distort quite alot but after talking to a few who've bought it just lowering the pick up abit gets rid of this problem both bass's are great!!

thanks for that, I think you may have convinced me to get the jag :)
Oh i forgot to add, how is the pre-amp on this bass?

No problem happy to help!, the pre-amp is great quite alot of control over the sound I just eased off a little on the treble and I'll lower the pick up if I get the distortion problem depends on how its been set up factory wise, the action for me was a little high so I'll lower it and get lighter set of strings on it so I can slap better on it, anyway if I get it soon I'll let you know! :)

The Jazz is a killer bass for the price, I have one and love it. Tried the Jag in the various pickup configurations and just couldn't get the range of sounds out of it that I wanted. It was a good bass but the Jazz seemed like a better choice for me so I bought it.
That said, I also tried the short scale Jag with the P/J configuration and it was fantastic so I bought it too.
Kinda fun to be able to go the the guitar store with enough money to buy a MIM Jazz and come home with two basses both sounding as good as the MIM I went in to buy and still having change left over.
