Squier VM Jazz upgrades.

Decent if you can ignore the fretbuzz. It's getting fixed and upgraded, idc how many people say "don't upgrade it it's just a squier". It's my bass of destiny.
Before you start spending any money on it, you might want to figure out what all you want to have done on it. If you have to replace the pickups and the preamp and get the frets dressed and have it set up and replace any of the hardware, you might be better off just getting another bass. Notice, I did not say anything about getting rid of your Squier -- but if you have to spend a substantial amount of money to make it just right, you might be better served to use that money to buy a bass that is a lot closer to what you really want.

I would recommend that the first thing you do is get the frets done. The tech who does it will also adjust the neck -- and if there are any issues with your neck, it's best to know that before upgrading anything else.

... have we established the reason for the fret buzz before we start doing surgery?? .. where is it buzzing, how many strings/frets is it buzzing on, how high is your action set and have you tried to adjust that, or saddle height, neck relief, etc ???

So I'm planning on upgrading my Squier VM Jazz bass with a babicz bridge and SeymourDuncan QP's. Should I 'upgrade the preamp' as well and if so, with what? I would rather not have to do any drilling.

'upgrade' what preamp?? ..

Last place I took it to said they couldn't get rid of the fret buzz. These were new guys for me and I'm taking it to the place where I basically grew up at tomorrow. As for the preamp, I'm just looking for recommendations and am aware that a passive bass doesn't have a preamp.

I just got an 09 VM Jazz in natural. This bass really rocks! I tweaked the neck a tad bit and there is no real fret buzz. I wish the action was a tad lower but oh well, mabye in the future. I dont plan on doing all kinds of crazy mods to this bass, I dont think anyway. But I would like to get another set of pups in there (should be on their way soon), most likely change some of the hardware, def the bridge. Probably to either a BAII or some kind of other high mass. The babidz is on the top really. I always wanted one. This is my first J bass ever and overall so far, Im very pleased with it. I look forward to working on this bass as I do on all my other ones.

Let us know what you are doing/did to your VM Somnam. I'd like to see what youve done.

I have a Godlyke Disciple 4 Prototype coming soon, but I think I'll eventually change out the pick ups and put a babicz bridge on the jazz in the future. :)
