Don't know HMR; had 3 Stambaughs built(fretted 6, fretless 6 & 7)& owned a used fretless 4. Great basses, incredible value, & yes, Chris is very easy to work with. I can highly recommend him.

thanks fellas!! I've narrowed it down to these two builders to build my first custom bass. I'm excited!! I'm leaning towards Stambaugh.

Get a firm idea of what you want. Chris (or any good builder) can help you out here and there but the more you're able to articulate what you want the better the results will be.

I've only seen one HMR that a TBer used to own. I have a Stambaugh on order, but have never actually played one. I'm not too worried, though.

Yeah, I ordered my Stambaugh without having ever played (or even heard for that matter) one, just based entirely off of the feedback from TB. A bit of research into what kind of tone I wanted and Chris was able to make me an incredible bass. Couldn't be happier.

yeah I think that I'm nearly through researching the electronics. MIKE POPE has been a GODSEND offering advice about preamps and pick-ups. I will have a custom pre-amp built with compatible pick-ups. I will keep you guys posted! Stambaugh is looking better and better!!!!!!!!!!

I've owned three Stambaughs, all nice basses. No experience with the other builder.

Echoing 'know what you want'. Specifically, what sound you want, & all the details like scale length, string spacing, bolt-on vs neck-through, etc. One of the many cool things about Chris is that he'll do whatever you ask(& pay)for, but will advise against things that contradict the desired end product. Also, like any small operation, there will be delays- pickups won't come in, the finish went bad & had to be redone, etc. It can't be helped, Chris will keep you informed(he nearly always answers the phone)& it will be worth it.

I got a Stambaugh built and shipped to Australia. Chris was extremely easy to deal with and the bass is beautifully made. I highly recommend Stambaugh.
