Star Trek Discovery

I just realized Captain Pike and Cullen Bohannon on AMC's western Hell On Wheels are played by the same guy, Anson Mount. I kept thinking he was familiar.

That would've been ridiculous. But they never should've done it in that era. They showed the Enterprise in TNG for Scottie. They showed it in DS9, toggles and miniskirts and all. It didn't need to be ten years before Kirk but they did it anyway. The show runners don't respect Star Trek.

If the show had the look it has with ships that look more advanced because switches and toggles would look silly, fine. But they had technology in Discovery that shouldn't have been there. It's science fiction. It's supposed to make an effort to get things right. I don't think when they introduced the spore drive that they knew they were gonna write it out of Federation history by the end of season 2 by sending it to the future and swearing a few hundred people to secrecy. I think they just didn't know or didn't care and scrambled at the end. Holographic ship to ship communication that was brand spankin new to Benjamin Sisko 200 years later. That wasn't part of the spore drive cover up. I guess they just forgot. Voyager really could've used that spore drive. Admiral Paris and Reginald Barclay could've gotten a special dispensation to access classified technology so Voyager could tap into the ol mycelial network and get home. Make sure Harry Kim doesn't tell anyone.

I haven't finished Season 2 yet but it won't matter - I would fail. The integration of Spock, his and Michael's backstory, the search for the 7 Signs and the capture and reveal of the Red Angel. Section 31 and the AI and Control.

I could probably write up a pretty good list of the story highlights if I tried. But telling a coherent narrative of the entire season would be futile because, hey, there really isn't one.

So there were 7 red signals that appeared throughout the galaxy? The alpha and beta quadrants? They appeared and then went away? But the ship would go to where they were and they showed up again? And there's a sphere? And they send a probe into a temporal anomaly? And it goes into the future and comes back with an AI. And section 31 uses their own AI and this new AI from the future bonds with it? And Michael Burnham's mom is the red angel who appeared to Spock because he's dyslexic and Spock thought he went crazy so committed himself but then section 31's AI framed him for murder so they could do....something? And Michael Burnham's mom invented the red angel suit so section 31 and presumably Starfleet higher ups knew about it but didn't tell Pike who was on the Enterprise and something happened to it that we don't know so he has to take over Discovery to investigate the red signals but some were Michael's mom and some were Michael in the red angel suit and sorta the Borg but not the Borg and Gorgeou kills the not Borg in the spore drive control box with magnetism but Discovery goes into the future anyway and Saru's people were in an ongoing war with oily aliens who took turns subjugating eachother so Saru's sister could learn how to fly a fighter shuttle and Spock has a beard, or something like that.

And let's not forget Voq's baby who went to Boreth but became an adult in a few weeks because time crystals because the Talosians were the only ones who could un-crazy Spock because the red angel made him crazy with visions of the end of all sentient life from the AI that went to the future and came back and made the other AI the Borg but not the Borg who wanted the sphere data to achieve sentience. And Tig Navarro.

I finally finished Season 2. They tried really hard to tie all the episodes together, although not entirely successfully. Something something something wormhole. Something something something Section 31.

But I liked it enough that I'll continue with a Season 3.

My dad always worked for himself before he retired. When I was a kid and we were planning a vacation he'd always joke around and say "I don't know if my boss will let me take the time off work." I'm sure CBS is very pleased that CBS had allowed them to renew their CBS show for five seasons.

He was by a wide, wide margin the best character on the show. I don't know what they'd do with him though. It would have to be pre-Discovery since we know exactly what happens to him after the events of the show. Him as Captain of the Enterprise doing actual exploration in the years leading up to DIS would be great. But then it couldn't be about a threat to all sentient life in the universe and that's what all new Trek has to be about.
