Starting with effects?

I really want to get some different sounds out of my bass, so I was thinking about starting with some pedals. I was told that buying used is best, but I dont have any used music gear shops around, or at least none that have bass effects. If i had to buy new, what should I buy? People have spoken very highly of the Big Muff, and I sorta wanted a distortion effect, just to start out.

If you ask me, a multi effects will be good. If you are starting out efx, u prolly cant tell the diff between digital and analog Efx. So the versatility of a multi Efx would be good. I started out with a zoom B2. I would recommnd line 6 m5 or m9 as a first pedal though. :)

Thats what i was thinking too, but it ran into a couple of problems. First, i probably wont even understand half of the things that come with the thing. I wasn't looking for anything too complicated, or too pricey. The big muff is around the area i want to spend, about 80 or less. I looked up the line 6, and its a bit out of my reach.

Get a multi-Fx unit, like a Line 6 bass pod xt live or a Boss Me 50b, The $$$$ spent on individual pedals to do what one of those can would be staggering.
get some experience in what kind of sounds you want to be able to make, then dump tons of $$$ on a pedal garden!

check out some Joyo pedals, they sound ok but kind of flimsy, say get a chorus and fuzz for less than $80

I wish that I had skipped the multi-effects/cheap fx pedals when I started out.

I say check your local craigslist as well as the classifieds here and on thegearpage.net...figure out what the stuff you're interested in sells for and then find a good deal---either right at or below the normal selling price/get them to throw in shipping, etc so that you can re-sell it for the same price later or trade it without losing any money. Fuzz is the place to start. Or possibly a compressor. This where a trip to guitar center can come in handy.

That's my $0.02 based on my experience (buying a multi-effects then a Boss DS-1 new and then not being able to re-sell them for anywhere near what I paid)

I would love to, but I still have the problem of not being able to afford the more expensive one. I would love to have the option of buying a somewhat nice multi effect station, but my parents arent going to pay for it, i dont really have the money right now, and my parents probably wont trust something I buy online (paranoid :P).

if thats near you, it would probably be a good option?

It's not some super-cheap multi-effects unit but it will give you quite a few knobs to tweak---compression is useful and distortion is fun.

Yeah, though i think brunswick is a bit far, and my dad drives me most places, and he wont want to drive there :P And it also depends on the price, it seems like a good deal though :D

If your mainly wanting overdrive/distortion then a seperate pedal or a two, of those, would be fine. I favored the marshall govner, proco rat, and digitech bad monkey myself. Wasnt a fan of big muff. I have used and prefer upper end multi effect units for over a decade now though.

How much money can you spend, facepalm?
I think a multifx is a great place to start. Buy one second hand.
Whatever you think of getting, search for it here. You'll pick up all sorts of opinions on whether its good or not, and you might find one for a great price. You're dealing with real people who have ratings and comments from previous transactions.
