Starting with effects?

How much money can you spend, facepalm?
I think a multifx is a great place to start. Buy one second hand.
Whatever you think of getting, search for it here. You'll pick up all sorts of opinions on whether its good or not, and you might find one for a great price. You're dealing with real people who have ratings and comments from previous transactions.
And regarding the Metaphors - look it up on here for comments.

ANywhere from 40-about 80, though id like to not use all my money, as im still trying to save for a car and stuff. Thats why i was leaning toward this 60 dollar big muff i can get from a guy close to me (location-wise)

Just thought I'd add something(even if it is 2 weeks old) I started on a multi-effects pedal. And I really wished I hadn't. It just isn't as good as having separate pedals. To start out, I'd recommend just getting a distortion or overdrive. The big muff is great, as is the Boss ODB3. And both are rather inexpensive. Just so you know. I am a heavy effects user. I have a phaser, chorus, distortion, wah and fuzz. Looking to get a whammy as well. :) Really opens up the sound. But one thing not to do, is over use them. Just because you have effects, doesn't mean you should use them in every song.

Got the big muff, love it to death, might go for a wah pedal next, i love funk, and itll be good for that

Cool. Well as far as wah's go, there is a lot of choice. The wah I use is a morley wah(Pro series II, but it's been discontinued, the PBA is the current one they sell for bass). I think it's great for Funk, rock and metal. It has a boost or volume level on it. So you can set how much "ooomph" it has. I set it up very low for funk. And turn it up loads if you just want to whack out one note and give it a huge impact for stabbing with the drums. It's my favourite pedal on my board :)

Yeah, separate pedals would be my choice too. I have a Zoom B21U multi effects, but it doesn't get any live play, just at home. Hope you get sorted out, but the search for tones via pedals is endless. Joe Walsh said it best... Welcome to the Club (Here is the song in case you don't know it.)
