Status Basses

I had a Status as a loaner around 1989. It is very bright and snappy, not unlike a Steinberger, but much more comfortable. One thing that really struck me about Status was that it came with a flight case! It wasn't going to get any damage in that thing.:D

I have owned 5 Status basses over the years (still own 2). They are truly great basses. Very defined and detailed tone. Very comfortable too. Some of them were on the heavy side too but nothing detrimental. Post sales customer care is top notch too

My main bass is a T-bass. Very high quality instrument, excellent neck, quiet electronics. Unfortunately, they're hard to find.

I also have an Energy, which was an entry level model. Also a very nice bass, it surely has that typical Status sound. The neck is too wide (but slim front to back) to my taste, and something about the body contours/shape or whatever makes fingerplaying comfortable only over the neck pickup to me. Finger picking with my thumb resting on the bridge pickup just feels wrong. Could be just me though. :hyper:

I too really like mine and I must say can't really play over the bridge pickup, either, but I suspect most of it has to do with the fact that the pickup is located really close to the bridge; coupled with the fact that I pluck with three fingers (I can't really play with two fingers any more), the string tension is a bit much down there. Other than that, it's a ridiculously punchy sounding bass that needs almost zero EQing when I record with my bands.

Mine is really light, by the way, I'm pretty surprised that most people here have heavy Status basses.

Sounds good guys. I was going through old videos last night and came across a vid by Deon Estus (Wham!, George Michael, Brainstorm) called Heaven Help Me. I then found an interview on Youtube and he had a Status 92 Classic with him. He played it and it sounded so sweet that it peaked my interest. I don't know where I will find one to try it out. I wont order one before knowing if I "actually" like it but I'll keeps my eyes open.

Some great clips of Mark King playing various "Statii" with Level 42 on Youtube. Worth a look. The distinctive bright punch of those Kingbasses comes right through, even with crappy computer speakers.
