Status Question

This may sound like a stupid question but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere - I have just bought an active Status Energy.

There are 3 pots on it - I have identified the Tone and Volume but can't work out what the pot nearest the lead input does? :eyebrow:

I thought it might be a balance between the pick-ups but I can't hear any difference at all if I play it and turn the pot!

Hopefully someone has an answer.

Cheers,
David

I'm not familiar with the Energy models having only played them once or twice. However, I would assume it was the blend control, maybe it's been disconnected?

Try asking at Invalid Link Removed, you're pretty much assured an answer there!

Thanks for the reply.

My first thought was that it might be a balance control for the pick-ups (I'm assuming that's the same as a blend control).

I had a close look at the wiring yesterday but it seems fine. If it is a pick-up balance control - should there be a noticable sound change from the Status when turning it?

Cheers,
David

It's easy enough to check if it's working. Plug it into an amp then turn the pot all the way in one direction. Gently (GENTLY) tap on each pickup with something metallic like a screwdriver or a scissor. If it's a balance control and wired properly one pickup will be on, the other won't. You can't miss it.

Well I sent an email to Rob at Status as suggested and received a prompt and helpful reply.

It would appear that I was wrong about the pot nearest the lead input - it appears to be a tone control as described by Rob:

The control nearest the jack socket is the tone control. It may just need to have the nut tightened to make sure the pot is earthed properly. Another option is to solder a wire from the back of the pot to another earth point. The pot has to be well earthed so the capacitor goes to ground properly. The other two pots are master volume and pickup balance.

So there you are - will try tightening the nut tonight to see if it helps. Otherwise I think it might be wise to renew the whole circuit as it's over 10 years old.

On that general theme - would you guys be able to advise a good place for refurbishing this bass. Specifically the body, a natural wlanut finish (e.g. sanded down and re-treated).

Thanks again.
David
