Steelsound 2x12 review

DeadRBassistNJ said:
You guys know that cab depth has really nothing to do with low end response, depending on speaker construction, right?

More depth means a bigger cabinet, which means better low frequency response. So you're right, depth does not mean more low end per se, but a bigger cabinet is better for low requencies (if this wasn't true, bass cabs would be much smaller ala guitar cabs).

O.K.,

It's now been out on the road with me three times. I'll try to post a link of a short video we shot here in a bit.

The rig I ran was this:

G&L L2K or Dean Edge Fretless 4 -
Boss ME-50B -
Presonus Tubepre - (DI feed to PA for overall balance)
Peavey Nitrobass -
Avatar B210NEO + Steelsound 2x12

The Steelsound cab has done (to date) just fine...great tone and overall super durability. I tossed it around quite a bit - I'm VERY happy with the weight - it's really not much heavier than the Avatar...and it's a LOT lighter than any of the guitarist's cab's etc. Hooray for me.

I'll post the link shortly.

Take care,
Jay

These were done with a dig camera...which picks up bass freq MUCH hotter than treble. Which is to say these "movies" are very bass heavy. However, for the purpose of the cab review, that works fine.

These are short - the end of "Little Wing" and a segment of "Twilight Zone"

Little Wing

Twilight Zone

But aren't we hearing the PA, not the cab?

You're hearing a mix...obviously with the venue that small, we weren't able to completely run me through the PA....so you are correct; however, we ran just a VERY little of me through the PA for sound reinforcement. You're hearing a pretty good combination of the cabs.

Good point, by the way...I'd like to mention that it's been a great thing starting to mix the stage/PA mix for bass/kick drum. In larger venues, we can turn down the cabs even more and concentrate even more on the PA.

Result, I came in this morning at 3:00 after 10 hours of playing this weekend with NO ear issues, headache, or "fuzz"

Sorry to get on that tangent...Jay

Nice low end, sound, playing, etc! Which fretless did you use on Little Wing?

My cab is dying to get out of the house (my bar gig is not 'til 7/8 though :crying: Once I get a 5-banger I'll have a good excuse to drag it to church too to handle a low B :p .

Edit: smilies didn't turn out right at first :(

The fretless is a "lowly" Dean Edge 4 fretless. I love it....strung with D'addario half-rounds it has a nice punch if I roll forward to the neck pickup (as in that segment), or the mwah really takes off if I roll the pickup pan slightly toward the bridge pu.

Next time I'll make sure someone gets a "softer" passage so the bass's "fretless" tone will come through.

Cabwise - I think you're going to have a great experience here in a few weeks at the gig.

At my church here, I really can't use the 2x12....I use a small combo and PA, and that's all the volume the venue can take. ;)

I've really been favorably impressed with this Steelsound product...now once I've replaced that jackplate....

I just ordered one of their 4x10s, I want to pair it up with a 2x12 but support won't get back to me on whether or not they have an 8 ohm version...

anyone have an idea?

This is still one of my issues with the company - it's tough to get them to respond in a timely manner.

Try writing the email to them with "RES CINDY" in the subject line.

I actually just call them - yes, I wind up leaving a message, but they usually get back to me within a day.

Can't see why they wouldn't wire up an 8-ohm version.

Nice. The chassis(?) on the driver looks higher quality than the ones they used to have. All of my drivers (haven't purchased any in the last year and a half though) have been pressed, those look cast (heavier but stronger).

I highly recommend their speakers to anyone looking to learn to build their own gear. You get something highly usable and you don't have to worry about the pricetag as much as other offerings (in the event you screw something up).

The Knights and the Executioners both have cast frame, everything else is stamped. The warriors are surprisingly good, for $35 each they make nice HT subs (I have one in a cab on each side of me right now)

Madison has become pretty damn imnpressive for they're age IMO, they have for the most part made good business decisions and made a quality product. They've gone through all the same problems as other companies do, they've had some bad designs and even some bad manufacturing, but they seem to have they're **** together. They're drivers are designed in the US and built in China, which is common these days, they're cabs are hand-built in the US I beleive so they seem to have a good vibe going on.

As far as SS's customer service, I have never once had a problem. Once I made an error in my order and had already paid, so I called up they're office and right over the phone the order was cancelled and a new invoice was made for the correct order, I think that is good service.

You're correct on their service - once I've gotten ahold of them, they've always come through with whatever needs to happen to satisfy the customer.

I've been especially impressed with Dawn - she's gotten back to me VERY quickly concerning questions and ideas. I'm getting ready to buy a good deal of PA equipment from her, and she's been helpful and accomodating.

I agree on the Madison drivers - the more I play them, the better I like them. They also have some other bass/guitar gear (to include a tube/SS hybrid bass head, and an all-tube guitar head)...haven't seen reviews on those.

How do I get a hold of Dawn? I've left 3 messages and they've NEVER got back to me.

I finally got a hold of Dawn today over the phone. I was expecting someone very rude, I was wrong. She was one of the most helpful people I've ever dealt with. I asked her about a 2x12 in 8 ohms and she said she'd have to call me back on that. Expecting a call back tomorrow, she calls me back in 5 minutes. She tells me they don't have that and asks if anything else will work for me. I tell her I just need something with more low-end then their 4x10. She says she'll call me back and within 5 minutes says she can hook me up with a 1x18 at 8 ohms. Took the order over the phone. Very helpful. :bassist:

I have an SS 4x10 and 1x18 on the way. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Their 18s are awesome. I just finished my 2x10+1x18 combo (size of a standard 6x10). Seriously nice sounding cabinet.. not quite the volume of my big cabinet, but I think it's the nicest sounding cabinet I've built (tooting my horn).

When you get a chance - could you post some clips? I'm interested in the combination of those size drivers.

Did you include a horn?

Take care,
Jay

Good Afternoon all,

This is Dawn from Steelsound. I just wanted to jump in and say thank you to those who posted the nice things about me, and i want you all to know i do really try.. i know its hard to get ahold of me, but please realize I am extremely busy.. and i do try to get back within the same day.. but sometimes it is the next day .. but I am dedicated to try to get everyone happy and taken care of.. and i have been in here and read the bad reviews to and taken note of those to try to make those issues better. There are times when hour after hour when I have been yelled at by customers who, in fact, have abused their equipment, then they are really upset with me. I try to explain to the best of my knowledge that i have from being here 3 1/2 years. I dont know it all but what i dont know, i will find out for you the best I can. So I think i will try to stay in touch here with you all.. but do realize how busy it is here on this end. I work my tail off. and do make most people happy, its those who dont understand their equipment or how to use it properly that seem to post the negatives on most and i quote MOST subjects. Yes there are things that need improved sometimes on our end and on product, but know that we are constantly revising and revamping to make items better and work for everyone out there who actually uses the equipment. My husband is a Dj also and i work with him in what spare time i have.. but i have gotten my hands dirty and experienced a lot but i do have a lot to learn.
Thanks all ill keep in touch
Dawn

Thanks for posting...I appreciate your customer service, and the fact that SteelSound really seems to be upgrading their products while keeping them affordable (much like Dave at Avatar)....

Keep up the good work!
Jay

On another note - can't wait to hear the clips from the 1x18/2x10 combo from Patrick...gotta be a monster cab!

And a monster load;)
Back in the day, I packed 2 18-210 cabs around. Huge sound, and the bonus of moving two refrigerators with every job. I'm much happier with todays smaller, lighter equally functional offerings. Plenty of vendors pack that kind of punch in smaller boxes of varying configurations now. You can see my profile for my current choies, as this is a kinda sorta hijack....
