Steelsound 2x12 review

How does it compare soundwise to Avatar B212? I have one and love it, it's my main gig cab. I'd like to get another 212 sometime. Just curious about this cab, cuz I know some people looking for a cheap bass rig, and I want to be able to make a couple recommendations before they make a stoopid move.

It's very comparable to the B212 - probably just a "bit" more "modern" in tone if that makes sense. Personally I prefer the extra 1/2 inch in depth of the Avatar, yet the SS doesn't suffer from lack of response, and has plenty of headroom. I think that the Avatar would just very slightly win (IMO) in the sound category once you install one of Gary's 4th order crossovers to take the hiss out of the tweeter. I do appreciate the piezo's lack of hiss and the quality of the SS overall sound, but a well done horn+crossover should always beat the piezo. Bottom line - I like the SS cab's sound...a lot. Matched with Avatar's B210NEO, the rig is simply fantastic.

All that being said - I think neither of these cabs is a bad move. The SS is about 1/2 price....I find that impressive given the fact that the performance/sound are just about equal. I like Avatar's products (especially their customer service) as well, so please don't take this as a competitive comparison.

Hope this all helps.

I mentioned in the review that the cab is loaded with Madison Knight 12 drivers. Please go to madisonspeakers.com as well as harmony-central - I think you'll be very impressed with the reviews and the products Madison is creating. Definitely NOT low end.

I really think this is the reason the SS cab sounds so good. Now that they're sprucing up their construction, I think their business will see quite an upturn.

I just got a B212 off ebay and I am looking for a B210 to go on top but was also considering a 2x12. Wonder how efficient that SS 2x12 cab is? Does SS have a 2x10 cab? Though I can only run my cabs full range with my current amps so no flexibility for me to work with, like bi-amping.

Yes,

They have two versions of the 2x10 configuration. The 8 ohm version has Madison drivers, the 4 ohm version has Eminence drivers.

You can check them out at Invalid Link Removed

Oh, efficiency on the 2x12 is 100db.

I didn't want to start another thread...Mine came in today. I agree with Jay 100% on the initial sound and construction quality in his review. As a matter of fact my P sounds more alive vs. the mid-grade 4x10 and 15 I used to use with it. From order to door mine took 6 days, which includes a weekend. Gig tests are forthcoming as well.

I guess now that someone has broken the ice maybe I should come out too. I've been using they're 2x10 cab for a year now. I bought it unloaded, purshased two Knight 10's, a rack case, and a wireless mic. I've also bought a pair of 15's and various speaker box components from SS and have always been happy with they're service. One time I made an error with my credit card, called them up and they dealt with it all over the phone, with no hassles. Shipping has always taken less than a week, which is good considering it has to cross the border to get to me.

Anyways, as far as the cab goes, I received the cab is a box, which was surrounded by packing foam and another box around that, so it came to my door in perfect shape. The speakers each came in they're packaging which was also surrounded in packing foam and placed in another box, the rack got the same treatment.

I unpacked everything, mounted some T-nuts in the box and mounted/wired the drivers, In my excitement I neglected to tune the port and stuff the box because I wanted to just hear how it sounded. After plugging it in I was impressed, so impressed that even after a year I havent bothered to actually tune the box, I'm sure someday when I'm bored I will but for now, 'if it aint broke, dont fix it'.

The cab by itself is sufficient to play medium sized gigs with PA support with a 5 string tuned as low as a G, the speakers have to move to go down to G but there was no audible distorsion at stage monitor levels. As a part of my rig, it sits on top of a Madison MAS18D and I have dont medium sized theaters with no PA support an rarely lit the Clip Leds on my Samson F800.

I will agree with the complaint about hardware, I had a case with cables on top fo my stack fall and land on the speaker cable, breaking the jackplate around the jack. The handles have held up fine after a year of being thrown around by roadies, I actually like the round grills although the full face grill does look much better.

For about $130 US plus shipping, I have had good results with my 2x10 cab and I'm sure that if one day I upgrade the hardware and tune the cabinet I would be even more impressed. As far as the rack goes, it is a Legion Sound 8U rack case, it has aluminum hardware all around and 1/2" plywood with pieces of 90' aluminum tieing it together. The rack weighs a ton, about 35lbs empty and over 100lbs loaded with my gear, so it is atwo person job, but it has held up great after a year of gigging, the outside has many signs of abuse, but the inside and the structure have held up great.

I have some PA cabs that I purchased from Steelsound for dirt cheap (they are located just up the road from me, so I didn;t have to pay shipping).

The speakers in the cabs are 15" Madisons and I found them to be rather weak in terms of power handling (they advertise a wattage capacity which is far greater than what these will actually handle), magnet weight (quite light) and range. YMMV, but I have found these Madison speakers to be rather insufficient.

The tweeters are a joke and are really only made for DJ applications, if that. The center horn tweeter blew almost immediately and the tweeters themselves are the cheapies you find on ebay with names such as "Pyle", etc.

The plastic corners are flimsey and easily broken, so you have to be careful how hard (or on what surface) you place the cabs.

The ones I have are built from particle board and they possess VERY sloppy glue jobs. The carpeting job is piss-poor, IMHO, and it appears that the glue that was used for the carpet won't last long.

Anyway, thought I'd toss my 2 cents in. I got what I paid for and they've done the job for practice.

It's good to know some of their other cabs and electronics have held up. Sounds like that 2x10 will hold up for you. They say that they're made so people can swap out drivers when they want. However, the test of time will tell much more about this new 2x12. For the price, it's worth the try!

Roundwound,

Nice looking rig...glad you like the cab - I'll be gigging with it several times this weekend again, so I'll update the review then.

Take care, Jay

Sounds like their construction from quite a while back. Their PA and monitor speakers are now built entirely with hardwood and titanium tweeters. The woofers are Madison Knights. I own a set of their 12 inch woofer monitors, and they are simply the bomb! They gig well, and they reproduce vocals like a machine.

I actually like them as well or better than the bass cabinet. So much so, in fact, that I've ordered their latest PA speakers for my mains - 15 inch Eminence woofers, Eminence APT tweeters, and a Madison CNA crossover - 500 watts RMS apiece!

Obviously YMMV, but I think they have done major upgrades to their merchandise since your set of PA's.

Just wanted to throw in a me too... I've never used a SteelSound cab (XAudio is the MDF cheap cab btw), but I've been using Madison drivers in every cabinet I've ever built.

My 4x12+2x10 monster uses all Madison Knight drivers (edit: hrm, actually may be Madison Warriors.. I can't remember now). Great sounding, louder than I will ever need, weights about half of an Ampeg 810 and (when I built it) significantly cheaper than any cabinet of comparable size, volume and quality.

I'm also building a 4x10+1x18 all in one cabinet (same dimensions as above) using Madison drivers.

Oh, also a vote here for their speakers durability. My oldest cabinet is probably 3.5-4 years old at this point and and the drivers are still working great. (various weekly full practices, live gigs, daily practices, lugging around all over creation and back, etc).

Are they using a 3rd or 4th order crossover with their horn in that 212 or just a single capacitor like Avatar uses?

You guys know that cab depth has really nothing to do with low end response, depending on speaker construction, right?

Here's what I found when I cracked open the jack plate. The black and white wire pair go direct to the horn from the white object (crossover???). It also has the imprint "10W 150RJ" on it. I took off one of the handles and took a picture of the inside, too. Looks better than some cabs I've seen.

Edit: I'm not a cab wiz, so I'm not so sure about the depth question. Important thing is it sounds good and is the same width as my 2x8 cab :)

Nice. The chassis(?) on the driver looks higher quality than the ones they used to have. All of my drivers (haven't purchased any in the last year and a half though) have been pressed, those look cast (heavier but stronger).

I highly recommend their speakers to anyone looking to learn to build their own gear. You get something highly usable and you don't have to worry about the pricetag as much as other offerings (in the event you screw something up).

I must admit I found their offerings downright laughable, but the first picture shocked me. Not bad, not bad at all . . . great strides, and would make a fine budget cab.

That "crossover" scares the bejebus out of me though. Not bad if you don't like tweeters in bass cabs, and are willing just to unplug the sucker and go without it. But that thing can't sound nice, I don't care who's ears you're using. I'd just disconnect it if it were me, because otherwise it appears to be a fine cab from the pics.

Patrick,

You're correct - no crossover. I was prepared for it to sound bad; however, it does not. No hiss, and a nice roundness to the tone.

The drawbacks are that there's obviously no L-pad, so the volume of the tweeter is unadjustable. This piezo is very subtle, so it does not stand out or overshadow the VERY nice tone from the Madison drivers.

I would also have liked the option of just turning it off with a button or switch - I actually like the tone; however, since the 2x10 Avatar cab has a nice horn, I'd prefer to just let it handle the highs for the overall sound.

Good points and I agree that it certainly sounds like some upgrades have taken place.

For reference, my cabs have the Madison Warriors in them. I actually replaced one with a 15" from an Ashdown Mag.

Nice pictures of the cab's insides, BTW.

On the crossover - remember this is a piezo tweeter...not a horn.

Jay

Thanks. I have a horn on my other cab, so I should open that up to see what the crossover looks like. My piezo performs the same, too...It works, but it's not in your face or hissy, etc.

It's been nice to see two musicians agree on something around here, like this cab. :D

You bet - I'm very happy I tried it! Gig reports to follow Sunday evening - It's going to see a lot of use between now and then!

Let us know how yours performs in public!

Take care,
