Like many, I grew up listening to SD on the radio and was familiar with all the popular hits, but never had an album or listened more closely than the radio. Then about 2 years ago my friend delved deeply into their catalogue and made a nice compilation tape and gave it to me. (ha, listen to me, compilation tape indeed!) I have really been digging into the deep cuts and just love everything I am hearing. So phenomenal, I wish I had been into them all this time. But it is kind of nice to still be able to experience old music on such an emotional level new to me. I recently had the same experience with Elton John. SD are playing here in Concord in a few months and I think I'll have to go.
Tonight, I will set up the p.a. and subs, and I will play "Hey, Nineteen" through the system so I can balance the sound. I have done this for years. Over the years, I have played Flim and the BB's, Spiro Gyra, etc., but I keep coming back to Steely Dan.
Man, i love me some Dan! Hands down the BEST sounding concerts I've ever been to both performance wise and FOH sound wise. Skunk Baxter and Walter Becker are two of my favorite guitarists ever. Becker weren't too shabby on bass either 
Nice! When I do car audio installs and FOH, I use the Aja album.
I wish that were true. My drummer is a decent dude otherwise, but he hates Steely Dan more than The Dude hates the Eagles!

Steely Dan is the one band that never gets old, no matter how much I listen to them.
Favorite song from my favorite Steely Dan album. Tough to pick a favorite. Every song is great.
I saw them in Tokyo with my father at the Tokyo International Forum right after they released Two Against Nature. That might have been the only concert I’ve been to with my father. We were on the second floor, pretty far from the stage, and the bass drums were too loud in the mix. But I got to hear Kid Charlemagne for the first time in my life, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Saw the 'Dan back in early 1993 (I was very young) with the amazing Tom Barney on bass.

Love SD. Saw Donald Fagen a few years ago with his band and it was really good. Also saw SD, but I liked seeing Fagen more. The venue and the band we great.
At the risk of being branded a heretic in the midst of the slurp-fest, this is incorrect.
Look, I respect Steely Dan. Talented, highly technically competent, etc. If it was "nobody doesn't respect Steely Dan" then maybe I'd agree with you.
But I don't like them. I would never say "oh, put on some Steely Dan, I want to hear that."
I find myself mentally nodding off about a minute in to every one of their songs, including this one. It's not really specific to Steely Dan, it's a genre thing—I just don't like yacht rock. I find it stilted, souless, and dull. I think this is exactly the kind of music that caused punk rockers to go "ewww" and go out to do something different.
Clearly, it's just me. Carry on.

This is really fascinating. Last year I picked up a used drum kit for a great price (I've never played drums before) and since then I have been "rediscovering" bands that I've listened to all my life but paying extremely close attention to the drum work.
Steely Dan is one of those "hearing for the first time despite hearing them for decades" bands that I enjoy the most.
