Thanks, hadn't heard that one before. Yes, the Dan of Steel was indeed fabulous. Absolutely.
That particular cut is in my steely Dan top 10. Fabulous.
So many great albums, songs, and performances. I do hope to do a Dan cover project at some point.
I used to live in a town about 90 miles from Las Vegas. The LV Jam Band society would come out every year to do a "takeover" of the town and its main stage, bringing folks and business traffic to place where it was lacking. The first few years, the theme bands were mostly Grateful Dead, but as the years went by, there were more and more Steely Dan covers and tribute bands working into the mix. It was a pretty cool shift from the loose eternal jams into tighter arrangements, the best being combinations of both. I love me some Steely Dan.
My fav is 'Do It Again' which one of my bands covered years ago.
I’m not a “Dood listen to this bitchen gitar solo!!1!” kind of guy, but there are exceptions. This is one of them.
My favorite Dan song is Hey Nineteen. A song about aging and being out of culture with younger generations. A situation that I struggle with in life now that I am 70 yrs old.
They are tops on my list of bands... great tune. I can't count the times I've watched this video.
They are a great band live. Surprisingly, Fagen hasn't yet decided to release new live material. A "From The Vault" series would be very popular and quite lucrative...

I fully agree with you on being out of culture, but mine was the reverse. I’m 61 and revered 60s culture and music. Born 10 years too late!

Always loved Steely Dan. Pretzel Logic being my favorite album. Rikki Don’t Lose that Number was the very first SD I ever heard. It’s memorable for furthering the intellectual side of my rock appreciation as well being a reminder of a few life milestones. Great thread here, BTW.

I remember not liking that distinctive SD flavour when I was younger. Then it felt like a switch was flipped. They’ve been a favourite of mine for many years now.
Some of us are still making music in the Steely Dan style. I just played the bass on this new original song. Not sure if this is a very Steely Dan topic, however: an anti-nuclear war protest song! (This is a lyric video)

I have a hard time picking a favorite Steely Dan album. I’d have to say Aja, if I were forced to make a call, because, Chuck Rainey. Those lines on Josie and Peg are awesome and a great deal of fun to play. But yeah, Pretzel Logic, Katie Lied, Countdown to Ecstasy, The Royal Scam, just lots of great songs, hard to pick a fave. Gaucho was a major contributor to the soundtrack of my college years so that ranks high on my list, of course.
I had a chance to see them a few years ago before Becker passed. Fagan still had all his chops, rockstar torticollis, and gave a great performance. Becker, by that time, was experiencing declining health, but he played what he played well, and they had a young buck playing the more challenging solos, so it was a great show.
Always been a big fan, always find it a fun challenge to learn their stuff. The great Chuck Rainey played on many of their records and I can't think of a bassist I admire more than Chuck. When he and Bernard Purdie teamed up in the studio, whether it be to back Aretha Franklin or Don and Walt, it was always magic. Here's some of that magic.
Chuck and Steve Gadd made a pretty good pair, too.
I have front row tickets to see what's left of Steely Dan in a couple of months. I'm glad I saw them live several times while Walt was still alive. The touring Dan is always amazing, but I will miss Walt.
