Steinberger Club

Tjluke, that is extremely helpful, thank you so much! What strings did you use on both basses?
HomesickBob, I've never seen any direct comparison of XQ (with EMGs) vs XL either, until today. Now looking forward to finding a video comparison :D

Your recordings causes me conflicts, i really like the additional wood of the XQ, never heard them in direct comparison.
Just joking, i like the XL sound too, it's a quite different style of gear... both with very strong characters! ;)

I'm very happy that my samples, in a certain way, were useful for you.
Well, both basses sound great, but honestly to me the L/XL series is THE Steinberger bass.
In 1998 I tried to order a XL5W but it was too late, I hope to find one in the future at a right price (for sure very less than 10.000$!!!).
Anyway, in the samples I used Rotosound swing bass RDB 665LD strings (45-130) on both basses (I swapped the same strings from the XQ to the XL).

Some days ago I tried a XQ4 with EMGs and Moses neck, made during the musicyo short "resurrection" of XQ model, and it sounded very very very good :bassist:, quite different from XQ with original Steinberger neck.

They all look awesome, no need to depict them, unless... how about showing yours in full HD? :p
The reason why vids are better is cos you can see where exactly (how close to the bridge) the bassist is playing, with what attack etc. It gives you the whole picture of how the sound was made
I do wonder how XQ v1 (the original maple one with EMGs) sounds compared to L/XL. They say it sounds the closest...
... will seriously look into finding an XL and making that comparison. Maybe HD. Sure it'll take me a while :bawl:

Rozeg must be happy... another true "Bergerista"! :D

@TJ, we're both after wides, preferable "THE" XLs but we would also take XQs (specially after what i heard today).

I fear the wides will not go under 10K$... when they ever go!:bawl:

:D:D:D "Bergherista", first time I heard, I like it!

Well, I know others Bergheristi (:D) that put in rest the XL for the XQ.

In Italy there is a very famous rock bassist, Claudio Golinelli, that received the first L2 bass imported in Italy in the eighties and used it on a lot of records and live show, especially with italian singer Vasco Rossi:

But once he tried the XQ, he switched to it:

About the wides, let's hope that Ned will regain from Gibson the Steinberger brand and put again in production the L/XL series!

That sound cuts through anything! Flawless!
Lemme throw in my 2 cents. Arguably the first Steiny imported to Soviet Russia in the eighties (according to an insider from Moscow):
Invalid Link Removed
Note how quiet those guys and their music are (musicians weren't allowed to rock or headbang on stage at that time)

@ TJ, Bergheristi... i like that too, we should give it international standard! :D
The Vasco Rossi song is awesome and so is the bassist's theme and sounding, very cool, thanx!

@ Rozeg, they got pretty neat gear for a '85 soviet band... but without head banging that was not the right feel, too bad for you guys then. Does your actual tsar allow it meanwhile*? :ninja:

* Not to mention the Pussy Riot drama, this is absolute suppression!

"Zemlyane" had the most advanced gear in the country. Yeah, these days musicians here can do just about anything, however occasionally we have some embarrassing situations. Often nothing to do with politics at all. Hey mate, not to start an off-topic here.

Looks like Claudio Golinelli had refinished his XQ4 in some custom metallic finish :)

A Steinberger bass imported in the Soviet Russia, cool!

Anyway I like that song, it is always a pleasure for me to discover music from different countries.

Let's all write a message to Ned Steinberger, something like that: "Hi Ned, this message just to let you know there are many "Bergheristi" all around the world that are waiting your return. Please, regain YOUR brand name from Gibson and put again in production your masterpieces!".

Glad to know you like Vasco and his bassist Claudio!

Ned's XL comeback, that's what we think about and hope for... unfortunately he sold all his moulds (they were on eBay years ago) and he launched his new Radius meanwhile, small chances to get a XL25 wide... :bawl:
Non the less i'll sign a demand to his address...

Dear Ned,
we are a couple of L/XL maniacs aka Bergheristi, having sleepless nights and a measureless urge to own and play one of your genius axes.
Please restart production of the XL25 wide (and perhaps all the P-, M- and Q-Series too... and please all in 25W also)!
Thank you so much for your genius approach in bass gear.
Best regards
Robert L. aka Homesick Bob
and plenty of other freaks!
Oh yes, before i forget: Rozeg wants a 6-stringer too! :bassist:

:D

Yeah, I agree with you, very small chances to see a reborn of the XL series and I know that Ned is always moving towards new ideas.
But I also think that for sure he is still very proud of what he did in the past and maybe... If he knows that there are still people all around the world hoping in a return of his bass/guitars made entirely (XL), or in part (XQ - XM - XP...), by composite material...
About the molds, I'm pretty sure that Ned won't have any problems to find, inside/outside the US, a builder skilled enough on working composite material.

First crowd rocking as Bergheristo ;)

This axe has so friggin' killer sound... is there any to compare?
