Steinberger Club

The ball ends stick out from under the cover and initially I was concerned about that as well but they've never budged. I'll wouldn't worry about it, under tension I can't see how they could move. Anything's possible I suppose but it's never been an issue.
The only string I'm concerned about is the low B. I haven't tried to intonate the bass with these strings on it, but usually, that B string saddle has to be backed as far down toward the end of the bass as possible to get it properly intonated. When that happens, it exerts upward pressure on the string. Normally, no problem, but with the ball being about 90% exposed, it seems like it would be easy for that bridge saddle to pop that ball out of its saddle. I agree with you, my concern is probably unwarranted, but I already have the string adapter, so using regular strings will for sure solve any issue with that that I have. The only problem I've had with the string adapter is on the G-string. If I don't tighten the set screw enough, it slips through the adapter, ruining the string. If I tighten it too much, the set screw snaps the string.

Thank you for your help. I realize you are probably right, and I'll take that into account when I order strings because the Rotosounds currently on it sure do sound good, even if their balls are exposed!:woot:

Since nobody responded to my question about LaBella stainless steel round wound strings (copied above), let me ask a more generic question: Do any of you use stainless steel round wound strings on your Spirit--preferably a newer Spirit say from 2018 upwards? If so, which ones have you liked best? They don't have to be double ball end strings. I have an adapter to use regular strings as well, so either double ball end or single ball end strings will do.
I have status round wounds on my Hohner steinberger. Good strings, light touch, good full sound. Had LaBella's on them before, but those had too much tension, bended the neck a bit.

Skimmed the last 10 pages of the thread but did not find a definite answer, so perhaps someone can help me out: Looking for a roundwould set to string my L2 BEAD. Rotosound RDB665LD: good fit or problems with string length?

Also: how good are the Steinberger branded double ball-end strings? Those are pretty much the only alternative to Rotos on Thomann, and for the 5-sets, even they are unavailable atm. If neither of these are good alternatives, I guess I'll have to go for ebay sellers. Unless someone knows a good source for double ball-ends in EU?

I have no experience but I have heard that the Steinberger branded strings are slightly too long and made for Spirit basses. Some people get their strings from Status.

The Rotosound set I tried were pretty short on the E & B strings, but they're usable. That's on both on my Spirit and my XL2, which per my tape measure were the same length. D'Addarios fit very well, but dunno where you'd get them in the EU. I live in the states and buy them online at juststrings.com. Also, the D'Addarios are nickel wound and are slightly darker than the Rotosounds, and I don't know if they're available in a 5-string set.

Daddario in a 5 string? There’s plenty.

Unless you’re strictly talking about double ball end strings..

Uhh.. should've mentioned that I actually am. I actually almost destroyed – or maybe did destroy for functional purposes – the threads for the little grub screw for the lowest string on the headpiece on my L2, trying to string it with a non-double ball-end B. With a fat B, there's not all that much for that screw to grab onto, apparently... I'm wondering if there's any sensible way to fix that apart from ordering a $100 + shipping + VAT + custom duties headpiece from Ed Roman guitars :/

Thats a bummer, I wasn’t sure if you’ve looked into a single ball adaptor to avoid being pigeonholed to Double ball strings

You can probably order just the part from headlessusa.com. That is, just the saddle and screw instead of a whole bridge. I did that on my XL2 years ago. The original was made of brass and the new one I bought was stainless steel, so it was much better. Make sure to lubricate the threads on it (and the others as well) while you have the tuner apart. I just use a thin coating of lithium grease.

I wasn't talking about the bridge but the headpiece. The string retainer thingy at the end of the neck. Which in L2 has grub screws for using non-double ball-end strings. However, apparently the screw didn't get enough purchase on the threads when using a big b-string, and at least part of the thread got damaged.

I got my L2 in 1990/1 and only found out this January about the grub screw thing
