Steinberger Club

oooh, another club i can join!
very early XP from Newburgh.

i have two replacement jaws an their way from Ed Roman's. It looks so small on me though!

Frets need to be worked on pretty badly. Anyone know how intrusive a refret would be? i could dress them, but any lower and it would almost be fretless

a bit of buckle rash on the back, but sounds great with the original center logo EMG passives

From everything I’ve read, a re-fret needs to be done by someone who’s done it before. The fretboard phenolic is pretty brittle and chips out easily. Anybody here had it done? Never seen a black XP with a white guard, may not be original, or just swapped.

I think i might just have them dressed and hope they still fret a note. Theyre very low.
I know, I've been searching. I've only seen one other white on black, but it was an XP. I have seen a couple of white with black guards out there.

It would be an odd swap with the way the pickups are mounted to it, but not impossible I guess. It is an original guard with the engraved logo.

I have the original gig bag as well.

If you see the internal wiring of an XP it's more than just a simple pickguard replacement.

I wonder if anyone here can verify by looking inside it. There are so many screws though I think I've only opened it up once if ever

This is what it looked like inside if i remember correctly (not my pic or bass)

I've had Steinberger guitar necks refretted with stainless steel frets. My luthier said that it's even less brittle or problematic than ebony. No problem at all, and it should be easy to find luthiers experienced with these fretboards, as they have been used on Gibson and Martin guitars (and others) as well.

In the US I know of these luthiers doing it:
  • Justin Kennedy (J Kennedy guitars, West Chester, OH),
  • Paul Schwarz (Peekamoose Custom Guitars), www.peekamoose.com

In the UK:
  • Chris Ward (House Music Limited, Bagshot, Surrey), www.basscentre.com
  • K.G.B Musical Instruments, Birkenhead, Wirral

In Germany:

I know a good guy here in Dublin I'll ask. Will report back.

Hi Steinberger thumpers and pluckers,

I had a hard time finding a stand that would work with the Steinberger.

I got a Hercules GS405B stand and it's sturdy, robust, and you'd have to give your bass a solid whack to make it fall over. The prongs are spaced just right for the XL2 and are neoprene covered so the bass doesn't want to slip off - the prongs do not rotate like cheaper stands.

Heh. I remember buying a little wire stand made by Steinberger for my XP-2, which worked fine, but was so light it would "stick" to the bass when you picked it up. I just use one of the regular El Cheapo telescoping stands. The XP-2 is wide enough it works, but I can see an L2 would be problematic.

So what do you guys think?

Is the white pickguard on black body a swap or a possible custom order? Or do you think the whole thing is parts? I dont think it is parted together as everything is original newburgh, but i can definitely see a swap is possible. Ive only seen one other white on black but it wasnt an XP or XQ. I cant remember what it was!

They also had the black on red XPs

Im planning on taking the pickguard off this weekend when i fix the broken jaws.do you think there is anything inside there that could point one way or the other in terms of provenance?

I'd guess i bought in sometime between 96-99

It's totally possible that it has simply been ordered that way. The old catalogs show only the same color versions (red/red, white/white, black/black), but I've seen more than one instrument with a different combination.

XPs have only been made between 1985 and 1987. You might find a date code on the pots, if these are still original.
