Steinberger Club

It's totally possible that it has simply been ordered that way. The old catalogs show only the same color versions (red/red, white/white, black/black), but I've seen more than one instrument with a different combination.

XPs have only been made between 1985 and 1987. You might find a date code on the pots, if these are still original.
yeah, i'll have a look this weekend inside if i get motivated. i'm pretty interested but there are so many screws!

i'm sure it's all original on the inside assembly wise.

i happen to be in a project where it works, but my guitarist hates it.

i have no real plans to sell it, nor am im offering it up here but if i did i'd want to know more or less for sure but i suppose it will be unanswered.

i do wish i had the third knob! not sure where i lost it, but i think they are original i believe

white on black XP here. interesting. could be aftermarket, but if not only the second i've seen including mine

with this video i'm gonna call it as a verified option and if i ever sell it, i feel i can sell as original and rare!

From what I understand, only around 50 (black) were produced. Not sure how many of those were fretless (likely less than 10) and/or how many still exist. I’m sure the bulk of them are locked away, and a good number of them are likely in the hands of Japanese collectors.
well, apparently one of the collectors has released one into the wild. and it's "on sale" for a paltry $25k. ;)

Aluminum? Both are black plastic, so I'm not sure which ones you're referring to.
The "black bevel top" knobs look like the ones used on the Steinberger L2 bass (pre-Newburgh), the "Vintage Steinberger Type Knobs" made by HeadlessUSA (green-axe) look like the Newburgh knobs which are also used on your XP.

However, the regular Newburgh knobs were made for smooth shafts, mounted with two grub screws. On your bass you've got the knurled shafts, and the knobs were only pressed onto those, not screwed. So it's just an almost perfect match. Actually there were two types of Newburgh knobs, with and without the grub screws, for exactly that reason.

is that top one plastic?
the second ones are the ridged plastic. The aluminum looking ones without the ridges and the klingon ridge on top !

Either way, i think i am going to go aftermarket. I can't justify so much for a knob (the actual knob, not me!)

maybe these:

Solid Aluminum Knob - "The Eagle" - Black (19mm OD)

After trying a couple I have stuck with the original Steinberger wire stand.
A pain in the butt yet a tribute to Ned's engineering. The only spot to put the left grip on the bass is exactly on the one it's in. Occasional diddling required, but it is a tight grip (it must be extricated) and it folds into the gig bag. It will accommodate any Steinberger instrument, my XM2 fits nicely.
