It's been a while since I pulled out my Spirit XT-25. I don't play it much, but I decided it was time for new strings. I actually needed to add some relief (loosen the truss rod) as it was on the verge of a backbow--a normal occurrence here in the desert. When I put my adjustment wrench into the truss rod nut, I sadly discovered that the hex head was stripped out. I even tried my Stew Mac 4mm Gripper truss rod wrench, and it wouldn't get a hold. So my question is, does anybody know if the truss rod on these Spirits is single action or dual action? If it's single action, I can probably replace the nut if I can get this one off. If it's double action, The bass is probably on it's way to the nearest dumpster. I found no info on the truss rod type on Steinberger.com. I also looked on Sweetwater as they're pretty thorough with specs, but nothing there either. I think mine is a 2018 if that helps...or maybe '16. Unfortunately, I don't have it with me at the moment.

No, I didn't. I never actually got the truss rod nut off the truss rod like I said I did in the quoted post above. I got it feeling pretty loose, then went to have lunch with a friend and typed in that message before going back to work on the bass. Almost immediately, I started encountering resistance. I stopped and called it a day, then woke up this morning thinking, 'I wonder if that's really a single action truss rod. It's not acting like it.' I thought I'd give Gibson another try, so I called them and got a real person. He looked it up for me and said he was surprised to find it was a dual action truss rod. So, be careful with your nuts! They're irreplaceable!

On the left is a 1987 XL2A with new EMG HBCS pickups and a new Hazlab pre with volume, blend and stacked bass/treble.

On the right is a 1986 XP2 with original EMG actives and volume/volume/tone controls.

I picked both of these up very recently and they have quickly become my main gigging basses…both got new strings yesterday and are ready for this Saturday's gig. I'm definitely loving them so far!

Honestly, not much. The XP sounds extremely close to the XL as it has the identical active pickups that the XL has…it's the XP model with the active EMGs, not the more common one with the passive EMGs. I mainly bring it as a backup to the XL for gigs….always want to be prepared

i just bought one today from a fellow Canadian on Kijiji almost exactly the same price you have yours up for ... can't wait! ... seems like a great price, too, compared to any of the usual suspects (EVERB). How would you describe the neck?

To me, the XP2 neck feels exactly like the one on my XL2. Narrow, fairly deep and very smooth and solid feeling. I'm only selling it because I found one of my Holy Grail basses the other day…an unlined fretless Steinberger XM2.
