Stepped on a nail

I've been working all year on a barn renovation project and I have managed to complete almost all of the demolition work and cleanup without a single injury, which is amazing.

So on Tuesday, after a long weekend, I was hitting the project as hard as possible. I was doing some brush removal and mowing around the building to clear out a space for a new door.

As is often the case, I found myself wandering from one task to another and long story short: I wound up wandering into a demolition zone to remove a little debris and while I was in there, a nail punctured the side of my boot and the tip jabbed me just bad enough to bleed. I have established pretty strong protocols for demolition safety, but this was like a perfect storm of tiny errors.

Anyway, I REALLY lucked out... I didn’t step straight onto a spike with my full weight or anything. The nail only went in about 1/8”, but I still required antibiotics. I felt sick to my stomach going back in the barn this morning to keep this project moving forward.

I was tearing down an old shed and jumped off the roof (about five feet) and a nail went through my boot and foot and came out the top of the boot. It hurt really bad and i said a lot of bad words. I didn’t actually feel it going in but it more than made up for it coming out.
The best part? I was about two steps from a ladder. Yeee haaaw!!

I almost fell out of my chair reading that. After all these years of fishing broken metal and glass out of this property, that is my worst nightmare. I actually gave my assistant a long lecture about that very scenario when he hopped off a low beam onto the ground a few weeks ago. I assume you survived?

Oh yeah, it took a minute and a tetanus shot, but back then i was healthy as a horse and healed pretty quick. The worst part was when the doc cleaned it out. He spent what seemed like forever probing into and through the hole with syringes full of liquids, assorted swabs and gauze. He said he was making sure it was clean but i think he was just a sadist trying to make me yell, and doing a very good job of it.

Oh lordy.

Update: the antibiotics seem to have cleared up the wound. I squeezed a drop of goo out yesterday, but the hole is barely there anymore. I wore my heaviest boots when I went back out today and cautiously continued digging out the final pile of rotten debris from the barn. I need to finish digging out a collapsed stable and then I am going to use mortared railroad ties to rebuild a new foundation and then chainsaw out a door through the side of the barn.

My father was a woodworker.

I was taking a bath when he lnocked on the door and asked for help....now.

He had driven a chisel through his hand. (Think crucifixion).

Drove him to the ER. Made me stop on the way and buy cigarettes. Never made a groan or complaint about pain except when they injected his hand with anesthetic.
