Sterling by Music Man SUB Ray4 and Ray5

The red looks good.
Too bad I've spent too much the last couple few weeks.
I played the Mint Green SUB (again) yesterday and it's fantastic. I love it.
I was fiddling around with my new black/maple Ray5 and although the preamp is really hot, it's not distorted, or at least it's not annoyingly distorted. I play rock music, pick-style and I probably my ears are used to a little bit overdriven bass.
I wanted to ask Brian (SBMM) and others who follow this topic, does anyone else has a hot preamp, but not distorted hot?
Also, has anyone tried playing their Ray4 or Ray5 with flats or semi-flats? I really love D'Addario (sorry Brian) half-rounds and I will try them on really soon.

I have a Walnut Satin Ray5. The preamp is hot but not unmanageable. You can use your tone adjustments and volume level to smooth the sound to where you want it.

On that note, I replaced my preamp with the Bart 2.3 a/p. The pre did smooth out the overall tone through the frequency registers. I was getting more drive on the higher notes that is smooth when playing back and forth on octaves now. What I didn't know about the a/p switch is that, being on the volume knob, when in passive mode there is no tone control whatsoever. That makes the passive mode mostly useless to me unless I run through an eq pedal and activate it while in passive.

I was originally going to do an full Bartolini install but found a complete EMG+BTS system for sale here for $60!
Bass sounds great now. Really smoothed out. It's still loud though but definitely no longer overdriven or distorted. Gonna try to record a video and post here.

I got the idea of the bart from you. I liked the passive idea because I have a MM 25th anniversary with passive and that's about the best sound I get from it where I play most. I have a friend who recommended bart electronics also.
I could tinker with this more and get the ultimate sound but as I do that I'm getting away from my original intent which was to have a starter bass for the newbies at church. I think this bass is perfect for that. My best course is to teach them to use the tone adjustments as they are to get the desired sound.
I think it would have been sufficient for that right out of the box.
Can anybody chime in on this? I don't have a metric ruler
but I'm thinking it's 16mm based on my creaky eyes and old tape measure.
...why not treat yourself to another! It's not good for instruments to be alone anyway
