Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but figured I'd just chime in here for the future. I had owned the stock SUB Ray4 for about a year and decided it was time to start doing some mods.
To start, I picked up an Aguilar OBP-2 (pre-wired from Fat Bass Tone. Great, knowledgeable guys over there) and the Aguilar AG-4M Pickup. Volume knob is push-pull (active/passive) to bring the OBP-2 out of circuit completely, wiring the pickup directly to the output jack, while still having control with the volume knob. Other than that, the tone controls remain the same, with no push-pull coil splitting or anything like that. I wanted to shoot for the vintage Stingray 2-band setup.
Could not believe the difference just that made. The OBP-2 woke this thing up like I couldn't believe... so, I decided to take it a little further, routing out a portion of the control cavity to accept a second 9V battery (still utilizing the stock battery compartment for the other 9V), wired in series, to make it 18V. The OBP-2 gains +6dB of gain and noticeably more headroom with an 18V supply. Even better. No photos of this yet, I may post some later. I can safely say both the extra 9V battery and the OBP-2 fit within control cavity just fine, with very minimal routing needed. Added new, beefier set-screw knobs at this stage.
The AG-4M pickup is amazing, but I continued my journey with a Delano MC4-AL/V4 pickup. That is THE pickup for this guitar, in my opinion. It's got more bottom end... I love the tone of the Delano.
Next is hardware. I was able to find a Stirling bridge that is basically an exact replica of the current bridges found on the EBMM variants, these bridges come on the higher-end Stirlings (see photo). I've yet to receive that, shipping from Indonesia, where the bass was made... hopefully that fits. If anyone has ever installed one of these bridges, I'd be very curious to hear the process. It seems like these are probably nicked from one of the factories because the same seller has multiples of the same parts, including EBMM pickups.
I also plan to add a set of Hipshot Lightweight tuners. The bass will be complete after those two mods.
This bass could easily have been finished after just switching out the pickup and electronics... but I can't help myself. For the price, these things are basically made to be modded.
