I love the generational thing... my wife is an (inactive) cellist and a superb first soprano. I play bass for fun, but I wouldn’t call myself a musician. But it’s rubbed off on my 13 yo lad: OBSESSED with the piano; blows a mean alto horn; recently picked up the flute; his singing is going from strength to strength.

Your kids playing music is one of the best thing any parent can achieve, I think. My job in life now is to support him doing as much music as he can fit into the day. Great thread!

YOU one cool dad too! Isn't it fun taking on that job of being the support? I just love watching them spread their wings.

It's funny how young people will listen to their peer group, yet dismiss what ol' dad's been saying forever.

It is, but I guess that's just the way of life. If she's happy and healthy, I am happy for her...no matter how she finally got where she wanted to be.

... I'm done. My next generation has finally decided to get serious about bass. After doing the school orchestra thing for a year and resisting dad's gentle encouragement about all his basses for a couple years, her mind snapped a few days ago and has decided to join jazz band in school. And has been *GASP* practicing for a few hours a day the last few days! Even had a fellow coworker at her job (another teen bassist) recommend 5 string for more variety in playing (never mind dad has had the same bad idea for all these years). Naturally, now she wanted her own bass instead of using good ol' dad's basses (although she did swipe one of my amps to her room).

Guess it's time to learn to roadie for her.

Mine did back in the late 1990's. She really liked my '84 Jackson Concert Bass. I didn't retire from playing until 2012.

Hey, encouraging someone to play bass is definitely better than encouraging them to play Xbox. Not necessarily putting video games down, but I have to hand it to any kid who can put an hour a day into practicing a musical instrument as opposed to a kid who puts five or six hours a day into getting to the next level of The Legend of Zelda or Mortal Combat.
