so it's a size thing? some strings fit one nut but not the other?
i would just pick whichever nut has the larger slots (hopefully it's the I rather than the III, i think that's a more clever and more solid design) and install it properly, i.e., permanently.
if you find that you can't get a string low enough with the I, remember that the slots can still be filed down like any other nut, but you have the advantage of being able to easily raise it up a quarter-turn if you go a touch too low.
