Another obvious benefit of the early exercises following the permutations is on your sight reading. As the tempo is increased you will learn to recognise blocks of notes rather than individual ones. Initially it was not easy for me to get through a whole exercise without losing concentration. Once the eyes stopped or fell off the music the LH soon caught up and stopped dead when it ran out of messages. Reading only two fixed notes meant that I could concentrate on the patterns which trained my eyes to be further out in front. This schooling helped overcome my tendency even as a professional to give up in the middle of extended fast note passages, e.g. Beethoven 9 last movement, Nielsen symphonies.
