We all did things in the '80s we're not proud of.I performed in one of those '80s videos, miming my bass part while the drummer waved sticks in the air behind an invisible kit. It was a very silly time. The performer also has no control over what the editor does with the material, and editors were usually non-musicians with little sensitivity to time or performance accuracy.

The more interesting question is why people do videos that aren't live performances in the first place.

Say what you will about him - he sure hires great musicians and plays the (P Bass) Deep In The Pocket while singing live.
Here's a few videos by bands I liked in the 80's and 90's where the bassist is playing a double bass even though they played electric bass on the recording. I don't know about Mike Mills, but I think Nick Seymour played double bass at a few Crowded House's early unplugged shows:
