Stolen Benavente SCD5 - Atlanta

well... another shot of bad news, my home-owner's insurance isn't being very coopertive. They are saying that since my bass was used for monetary return (in a business fashion), that I should have had a separate policy. If I wasn't using it for gig$, I would be eligable for an insurance check, minus the $1000 deductable.

I can't put into words how I feel, other than I'm really going to ramp up the search for its return.

Wish me luck.

I'm sorry to hear that, but it matches what I heard when checking on my homeowner's policy recently. If I play benefits and don't get paid, my homeowner's coverage (with deductible) extends to my equipment. Any time I get paid for playing, my homeowner's coverage does NOT extend to the instruments or equipment. There are a number of companies that cover musical instruments, usually at a rate of about $10 per year for each $1000 of value. Good thing for everyone to consider and investigate. DO NOT assume your homeowners insurance covers your instruments or gear.

After I read this post in the beginning, my heart sank. It made me go to my insurance company and ask questions. I am getting appraisals on all my basses. As soon as Gard and Roscoe sends me the ones for my two Roscoe basses I am getting a seperate policy for replacement insurance.

This has just really opened my eyes. J, I hope you are able to recover your bass soon.

Thanks guys... I'm still keeping positive about the situation.

There is a great insurance company that has NO DEDUCTABLE, called Heritage Insurance (PM me for details/phone number)... The guys at Jim's Guitars in Baltimore suggested I get intouch with them, so I did and I'm in the process of covering ALL my gear. I'm not getting put in this situation again!

Bummer j...

Unfortunately your experience is an example to everyone here...your home owner's or renter's insurance won't cover your bass if you use it to gig.

Although I have yet to make a claim and therefore can't vouch for their settlement record, I carry musical instrument insurance from MusicPro, and $8500 of coverage costs me $100 a year. Instruments, amps and cabs are covered for full claimed value with a $100 deductible.

Never heard of Heritage. My advice is to read your policy carefully. Make sure there are no excluded circumstances (i.e. left in a car, at a club, airline, etc.), and make sure they cover each instrument for the full value you claim (less the deductible of course, which should be no more than $100...DOH! you said they have none:cool: ). Ask if you get a discount with association membership (i.e. IAJE, AFM, ASCAP, etc.). Is the policy underwritten by a major carrier (MusicPro uses Firemen's Fund for example)?

I know, a fat lotta good my 20/20 hindsight advice will do in getting the Bennie back...I truly hope the putz that stole the bass walks into a local music store and they recognize it and stall the moron while the authorities are notified. It's happened before.
