Stoner/Doom 58: Green will happen, one way or another...

I have been playing guitar and bass for 20years and I don't know a single scale.

It's borderline pathetic. I survive because I have a good ear for awesomeness. I know where everywhere on the bass sounds like, so I play what my head thinks up instead of saying, "oh, this is the diminished 4th from the galactic siberian scale" <---shows how little theory I know.

Not knowing theory has never got me into trouble. I just want to learn it for the sake of being able to talk about music with other musicians.

I have written music by randomly picking numbers 1-12... but that was more in the punk rock days.

If I was going to create a bad ass looking P, I would go trans orange. Not sure the pine would pop enough. Maybe a cap...? Trans orange is just shmexy.

I think there are more people playing this genre of music than people that listen to it anyway, so join in the support group, lmfao

Haha, true I expect. It's just fun to play real rock.

I could use some feedback from you all. ...
Right now I'm waffling on whether to give it a transparent or solid finish. If I go solid I'll probably just do spray lacquer, black or white. If I go transparent I was thinking of doing something amber/vintage yellow style.

I'd go transparent antique white, like old bone. The amber sounds good too. i would -not- try to stain it, as pine doesn't take stain well at all. Rather you should spray tinted clear coats onto it so that the color is on the surface, not expected to soak in. (You prolly already know this...)

Headed to chitown! Cant wait to see Order of the Owls Orange backline.

Jealous. Is the guy's back tweaked all the time, or just when he's on stage?

NPD! :D

I knew the MXR had been delivered, but was surprised to see the Ascend show up, too!

NPDays rule. Followed closely by the day where you get to try the pedal out.

NPAD!! My SWR Interstellar Overdrive came in while I was at work today. The wait for quittin' time was loooong. :D

First thing I did was pop the tube cover and see what the previous owner left me.

The EL 84s are JJs and the 12ax7 is almost unrecognizable grey writing El-something. The preamp itself is no showpiece it has been rode hard and put up wet but I knew that going in.

Spent maybe 20 minutes with it between three of my basses and the results are mixed on sound.
This warrants more testing but it sounds way better operating as an amp than as a preamp. Directly into my 12/6/1 it has a very nice sweet spot of rich drive about 40-45% on the drive knob. As a preamp into QSC at 40-45% drive is much more overdriven and honky. I think I'm gonna have to work on gain staging unless the OT colors differently to a speaker than a dummy load.
This weekend I'll probably plug it into my black widow and see how much it likes lo--fi.

Now the question is would a 12AU7 or 12AT7 have better gain characteristics? As I understand this guy the first tube stage is supposed to be relatively clean with the "drive" coming from the EL84s. These look relatively new, could the bias be off?
I think my tube noob is showing.

Believe me, I know. You can stain pine with the right product, if you use a lot of sealer on it first, but I would never dye raw pine. Even the best stain job on pine is still uneven, it's just uneven along the grain instead of blotchy. I'll probably end up going with a tinted lacquer or shellac, depending on what color I choose.

I finished up the last of fixing the neck pocket, today after work. Straightened out the heel with the router and glued in a shim, made from drop off material that I cut from a clear section (no visible grain on top). I'm going to sand it flush and shape it, to hopefully look seamless, when I finish the sanding and contours on the body.

Nothing to do with the bass build, but I snapped a shot of this piece of fir my dad was using as a straightedge in the shop. Crazy grain pattern, looks identical on all sides too. Apparently it was part of a big batch he bought from a mill for a house worth of doors a long time ago. I just thought it looked cool.

Had a blast tonight, even though Chicago isnt my favorite place in the world...the traffic sucked going down. Played to like 3ish people, but whatever. Order of the Owl fvcking crushed.

No, he just sings like that.

Also picked up a vinyl from them, they needed gas money...

One thing though...we didnt get paid at all, it all went to OotO, which is okay I guess since they are on tour and drove from Atlanta. But we drove down to Chicago, even if it was only 3 songs for 3 people, I woulda expected something. Even the turn out for OotO was like 25 people at most, so I do understand, it just kinda sucks, since it was a show that cost us money. But seeing that backline live almost makes up for it, it was so damn...bonecrushing tone.
