Stoner/Doom Bassist Thread Part 13: The Lost Thread

And for the record I haven't owned a stand alone OSD. I do have an OSD with the LED mod, clean blend, and 2 drive settings being built into a box with a Grey Stache with a diode switch. Hopefully it should be coming my way soon. Real excited for that.

Can you describe what you are going/hoping to get out of the LED mod and diode switch? I've got a RT now with the three-way clipping toggle, and I'm wondering if it's the same idea in the OSD or not. [The idea being that the LED clipping is some nasty-edged distortion]. Is it basically the same kind of toggle being built into an OSD instead of the Rat Tail, including the "no diode" option?

Hey the LED mod is something Ry is doing now as an option on the OSD (I think still by request), replaces the stock clipping option for an LED which gives the pedal "a less compressed and more open sound" I figured I already had the normal OSD circuit as part of my DK and love it. So I'd go with the variation for more tonal options in the double pedal. The LED mod is not switchable, it's one way or the other.

The GS side of the pedal has the diode options, I'm guessing it'll be similar to the RT switch as mine is gonna have an LED/No Diode/Silicon.
 
i am not sure if people caught that discussion the other day about clippers but I will summarize again.

LEDs end up having less gainy, less compressed sound because they have a large threshold voltage then a silicon diode. Generally a Si diode has a threshold voltage of 0.7V but a LED can have anywhere from like 1.4V to 3V+ threshold voltage. The threshold voltage is imporant because it says what the amplitude needs to exceed before the waveform will be clipped. This in a symmetric Si diode clipping circuit, the positive and negative parts of the waveform will clip at 0.7V and -0.7V respectively. In a symmetric LED clipper, the positve and negative parts of the waveform will clip at 1.4V and -1.4V in the case of say a diffuse red LED where as for a bright white LED probably more like 2.6V and -2.6V. Thus much less gain, more output volume since the waveform can have a larger amplitude and less compression.

no problem, Any to further extend this, if you stack diodes in series you raise the effective threshold of the entire clipping circuit. So if you have 2 Si diodes in series then the overall threshold for clipping is 0.7V + 0.7V = 1.4V.

I merely wanted to give the idea some foundation. Its not that LEDs are inherently that way, its more of a mathematical thing.
 
nice man. Its gets more complex when you start to talk about soft vs hard clipping and symmetric vs asymmetric clipping tho. For example RAT is hard clipping, and Muff is soft clipping even tho both use symmetric Si clipping
