Stoner/Doom Bassist Thread Part 6

So we got ourselves a drummer who happens to be in two other bands. He's leaving on tour for a month with one of his other bands. Now we can use this time to write instead of looking for a drummer!

This is going to end up being a part-time band but at this point in my life I think it's a pretty good option.

beebass, i disagree that boxes are boxes and speakers are speakers. i do think that there are people who make way too much of it, but i notice differences. i know someone who through these super expensive, high wattage speakers in a bass cab and they sounded like turds. one of my swr 210's had more volume. though the speakers were rated for stupid amounts of wattage, they were meant for near field monitors.

i have two ampeg 810's that are identical in construction. one has old magnavox speakers and the other has early 90's eminence speakers. both are useable, but the
older cab clearly sounds considerably better.

laz, the dude may well have been being a prick, but a cab that old may have a speaker w/ a square magnet, and another with a round magnet.

i blew a kappalite in a 215. it was in a schroeder cab. it was a really nice cab, but i eventually decided it was too little modern sounding for me and traded it for my 2nd 810.

all i know is when i swapped the original CTS guys out of my 408s and put in these CB15s they sounded awesome, despite the speakers not being original to the box. maybe i got lucky, but my guitarist has swapped speakers in one of his matamp cabs, and both sets sounded awesome (IMO because the speakers were hi quality). i just cant imagine having really good speakers and them somehow sounding horrid because of the box, but i guess if a box is crappy enough that can happy. maybe i just got lucky in my experience but who knows.

i know acoustic was known for making quality stuff so in johns case i just cant see him going wrong swapping out old school 15s with a much lower wattage rating for new higher wattage speakers and have it sound bad. but who knows, im no scientist! haha

Tried some basses today. Tried a Deltatone bass, basically a fender knock off. It was mega light but didn't have a great feel. The kneck made that horrible pop noise when the pocket isn't tight enough. P+J configuration, something didn't seem right with this bass.

Then played the same brand, but the Ibanez knock off. Man, this bass sounded really good. Mega light too. I think it was active and if it would have had easier battery access, I might own it. Similar neck pocket issues as the one above. QC was below my standards.

Played a couple Ibanez basses too. First was a shortscale LP style. Horrible setup so I didn't play it very much and now that I'm holding my jazz bass, not much lighter either. It had a very weak E string. It was a very audible difference running through the strings. I have never had this problem before.

Played what probably was the star of the night, SR300. I might have walked out with this bass if it was in a different color. The feel was good, the tone was good. The bass felt extremely light. I might go to GC and see if they have more color options and maybe check out some more stuff this Sunday. I will also bring my bass fuzz to make sure I don't have any issues with whatever I play. Man the Warwick really ruined me but the ibby may bring me back.

I also played a peavey grind bass that felt light to be a neck through. The fretboard must have been uneven because there were dead spots all over the neck. You fret the 4th fret and good, then you fret the 5th, 6th, and 7th and nothing but clanking. I think I saw the same bass there 2 years ago. So, going to GC Sunday, maybe.

Bee: there are alot of threads around to cover all of this about cabinets and speakers. basically guitar cabinets have a lot more leeway for speakers since they don't deal with the lowest frequencies. but bass speakers need the right size, volume, and "tuning" of a cab to work optimally. Sometimes crappy speakers in the right box can sound way better than great speakers in the wrong one. It seems that it matters most at higher volumes, as the incompatibilities wont be as apparent at lower volumes, but as you push the cab you'll discover peaks and Valleys in the spectrum or get all farty way early...theres some application for modeling speaker response in various boxes available. I think its called WinISD.

i know, i was just telling john that it worked out awesome for me and id assume itd work out awesome for him if he went with a 70s box and swapped 215s. my 408s turned out amazing which is what i expected from a well built 70s box with good modern speakers. im sure there are instances that do not turn out well but i guess i got lucky with my acoustics.
