Kawai - there are a few companies out there who have attempted that design, as mbelue has mentioned. It's a great idea in concept, I just haven't heard of anyone who has done it perfectly yet. I've contemplated picking up the SWR interstellar a few times now, but have never pulled the trigger.

I know the guitar amp company Guytron did it with a single EL84 as the "power tube" that then fed into a 100 watt tube power amp in the head to be able to do the power tube saturation into what was, to all effect, an onboard tube PA.

In bongripper, the tuning absolutely had something to do with it, never could get tube amps to react the way I wanted them to, they never could get my low, low end out without sounding really muddy and unclear.

But for cstvt we play in D (sometimes F, but F a half step above E standard), that was all just competing with a heavy handed drummer and guitarists running 200 watt rigs on both sides of me.

I'm not trying to start **** or whatever, tube amps are sweet. I wish I could find one that would work for me, I've been thinking of picking up something that's more light weight and less costly to maintain than an SVT to run in combination with one of my hybrid amps. I had ran a rig like that briefly when I had my Sunn and SVT-II and it was the perfect mix of that undefiniable tube amp sound, plus the clean bottom end and headroom from my sunn. I ended up not using it live since it was carrying around a 80lb amp to not really increase my volume at all, but rather just get a slightly different tone. Now a 40lb amp...that would be something to consider.

We know your not starting just, this is the best thread in TB. I have even noticed subtleties in the V4b when it super cranked. Some times the lower strings will sound quieter since they are driving the input too hard. Then the higher stings almost sound louder.

haha youre not starting **** at all, everyone is gonna end up using different stuff for different reasons. i just always get confused when guys say they cant get tube amps to stay clean, especially SVTs. but i need to remember everyone has different basses and cabs and tons of other variables.

id love to be able to tune my bass down to F and try getting it to stay clean with my rig and see the results, i just dont wanna pay 40 bucks for 190 gauger haha.

And that is the OT acting like a HPF, and limiting your low end. Its not "wrong" or "bad", its a part of the design. It may not be what is desired. Then you compare that to a different tube amp with an OT that is more capable, and you get more low end at a higher power.

That is part of why I am curious to see how the new Mesa stuff performs on the bench. 465 watts rms? or burst? and at what frequency? If there is a significant roll off at 100hz, then the amp wont feel loud in the lows, regardless of how much power it can generate in the mids.

FWIW the Classic 400 loaded with KT88's can produce a 40hz sine wave cleanly at 400 watts. The down side is you have to haul a sh!t ton of iron to do so. Its all about trade offs.

theres an amp i couldnt get to stay clean at all. my V4, despite being a total hospital case, would literally break up at like volume 2 haha. sounded cool and i enjoyed it, but it was way dirtier than any tube amp ive ever used.
