Passive sounds better, id just ad a second jack straight from the pup and call it a day.








I could just use a looper, but then id have to up the beat every time, and my mouth isnt even coorodinated enought to keep a beat.

BTW.
As I have no chance to try more than a couple of Ricks in my area, I must ask about. 4001 are famous for their throaty and gritty sound, 4003 seems to have more solid, low end tone. AFAIK the main difference is neck width, truss-rods and hotter pickups in 03. What are your feelings? Would I get close to Al's thick tone on Dopesmoker more or less with a 4001? I have early 70's copy and it's definitely Squire's type of sound but anyway I find it usable for my playing... but wonder how to get close to that thick Dopesmoker's tone. Maybe early 4003s are fair choice? Please don't tell me about amps and his technique...

I've always lumped the Aguilar Tone Hammer, Tech21 VT Bass / Bass Driver, Tronographic Rusty Box, Fuzzrocious Broke Dick into that category of grindy preamps. Any can be used as a simple overdrive / toneshaper pedal but also double as a pre, and most can be modded with XLR's if thats your bag. Heard good things about the Broke Dick but the RB keeps me happy so no need.

Al picks up near the neck, sometimes even on the fretboard. That can make for a meaty tone with the neck pickup on. Give that a try.

Whoops, sorry just read that you didn't want to know about technique. My bad. Try this out as you are test driving your Rics though.

I've been using a Fulltone Bassdriver/Big Muff Bass/BlueBeard into a GK. Sustain for days..... I just purchased my holy grail - Acoustic 370 and I want to use the natural tone of the amp, as it is awesome. The notes decay too quickly. I have a Boss Expander/Compressor but it does something to the tone. I don't like it. Maybe I don;t have the settings on it right? Oh, my bass is a Fender Big Block. Any advice/tips for getting my bass to sustain more or setting to try for the baby blue boss?

So last night I opened up the Ray35 and did some hackin at the stock electronics with my shiny new $14 Amazon soldering iron. Figured out a clean way to disconnect the preamp from the pickup, set up the coils in parallel and wired the hot straight into the output jack. Results were surprising and very satisfying!

I recorded 3 clips in active mode, then 3 clips in passive: first clean in, then Rusty Box, then Grey Stache -> Rusty Box. Recording direct into PC through M-Audio interface. Fingerstyle in Drop B tuning.

The active clips are parallel mode, max volume, flat EQ (at center detents)

Passive clips are direct pickup to output jack in parallel coil setup.

Pretty surprised the output wasn't any lower in passive mode and the tone was very full range but didn't seem to lose any bass. Definitely has some additional high end as Ancient Tone mentioned a few pages back, but it seems really easy to dial it out at the pedal and amp stages. First impression, I love it because it has the exact Stingray sound I was going after, but without always hearing the preamp kind of squashing it. Seemed no matter how I set the pre, the bass was woofier than I wanted, midrange honkier than I wanted, and treble had a click/envelope effect. Just sounded artificial when cranked up to high volume. The 1-trick-pony passive tone just sounds more... natural I guess. And immediately I found that the Grey Stache and Rusty Box sounded better pretty much any way I set em, where before different settings would be fighting the bass pre.

I started jammin around with a thin guitar pick and the Rusty and it sounded bad-A so I recorded some of that too: bass is pretty nonexistent with that pick I was using.

Smart phone finally worked. Nice job. I like the Passive Ray tone you got going with the adjusted settings on the stache, like you said, the best.

Are you using flats? I quit using them because the sustain pretty much disappeared after they started getting dull. They just made a sort of thud sound, then nothing. I could fix it with the BBM or ODB-3 to an extent, but trying to play clean didn't work.

I'm not. I use SIT power wound strings. I tried my regular P bass and the same thing happened. I was running straight in to the 370 (just the tuner pedal). I'm wondering if I'm just used to the unnatural sustain of the fuzz Boxes? I'm not looking for any clean tones at all. I like the grind of 370 and need to ring out more. DOD 250 to overdrive the amp maybe? BTW, flats feel so good on the fingers. I wish I could use them.
