Tube pre, solid state power amp. It's a typical fender tone stack. Supposed to stay clean.

I know the V8 is supposedly much sought after. Is the preamp different?

Has a compressor and is rare as Hen's teeth.
Those V-types are everywhere.

Edit: also has a preamp overdrive circuit, apparently.

Aside from the nasty carpet, I dig the dark green and faceplate font, it looks quite doom. There was one (v8) for sale like a year or two ago. $$$$

Got a 2008 MacBook today from a friend who wasn't using it. Wiped and fixed up with OS Yosemite, GarageBand and soon I need to add ram and a ssd. Also a while back I got a Electro-Voice PL80c from a friend. I assume that's only good for vocals as the scant reviews seem to focus on that.

Would a sm57, and some kinda bass drum/bass mic (suggestions?) be good enough for a diy home recording setup? I have a FireWire box as well. This would be for vox, guitar, drums, bass, maybe horns (trumpet, trombone, sax).

For drums you'd want at least two mics besides the bass drum, I think, but it's doable with one.

SM57 plus DI or a kick mic will work well for bass.

I have a 12" Tom drum shell sans wrap with lugs and rims. Maybe I should try that diy mic.

I have several di's I'm sure, there's one or a preamp out on every amp I got I think.

Yes.

Snare mic, really. Not snare/hat. You'll be getting hat in pretty much every mic, most likely.

The preamp is based on the old alembic fx-1 (I think that's the model) I think the v-type preamp sounds awesome. For that price I would snatch it up all day.

I where the pants and have a couple jackets. They are stiff until broken in but totally worth it in durability. Folks at work know if I'm not wearing any pants it's get busy time.
