Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I've turned a corner on this type of thing lately. I realized the other night that I devote a significant portion of my mental/emotional energy into getting pissed off about how stupid, hypocritical and willfully ignorant people can be about a lot of things. Reading news constantly on all the little (and not so little) injustices, instances of corruption, racism, hatefulness, outright lying for an agenda and that sort of thing. I had to take a step back and realize that while these things might be "important", me getting all wound up, angry and frustrated about them doesn't actually help at all. If I want to devote my energy to things like that, it should be directly, in person, locally, about things I can actually make an impact on. Not just twisting myself up in knots about how systems I don't have any direct influence over are broken, police departments in states I don't live in are corrupt or people I've never met and don't have any interaction with think/act. It's really hard to do when you feel very empathetic towards people and have a tendency towards codependency (adult child of an alcoholic over here!) and you confuse taking responsibility for other people's feelings and situations with DOING SOMETHING. It's the "don't you understand how important this is?!" syndrome. Yes, it is important, but me getting upset about it isn't accomplishing ANYTHING to make it better. It's really easy to get into arguments with people over that kind of thing, because checking out emotionally over an issue can be construed as endorsing it or not caring, but the person getting mad at you (which was probably me, hi) isn't actually directly affecting or changing anything, they thing instinctively that getting people upset over an issue does something. Which it doesn't. People who want to help should put energy towards doing something that helps, not getting upset.

Sorry for blogging all over this thread lol.

I feel you, you want to do something and sitting idly by while people spout awful poopie or do awful poopie feels like a cop-out. But I learned a long time ago that I'll most likely never change anyone's mind if we're starting out that far apart. You're right though, doing something positive in order to help is a great focus for that righteous anger. That's what bothered me about the worst of the Bernie bros, they would spout endless crap about corruption and ending capitalism, but other than that would do **** all to actually change anything. Oh well.

Yeah, I feel you on the Bernie Bro thing. I saw a lot of people screaming "Revolution!" and then going back to the couch when it didn't pan out in a few months. No judgement really, I'm glad people feel passionately about an issue, I just feel like there's a big premium on emotion and not a lot of interest in action. Hey, I'm conversing with an MRA douche on Facebook RIGHT NOW. Not flaming them though, more (to me) just seeing a guy in his 20's who is resentful about women and presenting a pro feminist point of view from a guy who has been married 13 years, has kids, is the sole breadwinner, cooks dinner, cleans laundry, takes care of my kid, respects my wife, isn't a wimp or a "cuck" (ughhh), totally respects women and their right to choose and is a flaming liberal. Because on the internet, everyone who isn't alt-right is immediately a basement dwelling college student who's never had a girlfriend is a total whiny sissy. Today I made breakfast for my son, unloaded a semi, parallel parked a flatbed F350 with 6" of clearance in one swoop, worked 9 hours without a lunch break and I'm going home to cook dinner because my wife is tired after watching our kid and babysitting another toddler all day. I won't even go on FB to whine if I don't get sex or my wife doesn't kiss my ass all night. You know...like a "man's man" would lol.

I don't even know how I'd handle a conversation with an MRA guy, online or in person. Yeesh. I don't have kids but we're a lot alike in that way, yeah I can chop wood, fix a car, build a fire, fish/hunt, mow the grass, have a CDL, operate a forklift, repair electronics, etc. I also do most of the cooking, don't hesitate to clean, do the laundry, spend the afternoon at antique stores with my wife (and not piss and moan about it - seriously or "jokingly"). I just think that as a white male in the United States - I've got it pretty ******* good. Especially compared to anyone that isn't white or male. Women have been oppressed for thousands of years and we're just now in the last few decades starting to think about turning that ship around. So yeah, I have to time nor inclination to listen to someone spout that MRA garbage.

I have a very low tolerance for ******** and I'm not very good at hiding my distaste/disgust. It's earned me some points at work, when a vendor is feeding my group an obvious line of ********t apparently I go into full-on scowl mode and it intimidates people. The bossman has encouraged me to keep it up and even push it a little further when the situation calls for it. As someone who was raised to be polite and non-confrontational it's kind of amazing to be given a pass to call someone out on their ******** and not be nice about it. But I digress...
