Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

In my setup, the GK 800rb has a biamp mode, I run it in lows mode and it basically cuts off frequencies above a certain point, which is adjustable via knob. On the Superbass I run the amp pretty flat [fender tonestack, so 2-10-2], and back off the lows a smidge more if needed

Sorry if it was covered already and I missed it, but are you using any filters or EQs to take lows out of the guitar chain or highs out of the bass chain?

Generally speaking, the effects that I use in the guitar chain suck enough low end out of that side that I can control the rest with EQ at the amp or pedals themselves. For the times that I can't (when I've gone too heavy on the gain stacking but loooove the sound) I use either a POG, a Sub N Up or Broughton H&LPF to tame the beast.
For the bass side of things, if I can't EQ out enough of the highs to let the guitar chain do it's job, I'll use the H&LPF on that side. Thus far, I've never had to use the H&LPF on both chains at the same time, so I don't need to buy another... yet, lol

You guys are a bad influence. Starting to mess with stereo/biamping stuff... I want a stereo delay now....

I still gotta fully tear the orange apart to figure out whats clipping in the preamp. I'm totally not super if it's the crappy, horribly miss-matched guitar speaker in it or what. Works ok for a distorted high end tho...

... I'm gonna start looking for a stereo guitar amp...

Best low cost guitar amp I played was a crate td50c. Was stereo 2x10 and similar to a Peavey bandit in idea and function. SS with clean and tube emulation od. Great sounding. I think it's 25w per side, honestly really loud for it's size. I actually used it mostly on bass in my punk band way back in high school. I think you can find em cheap for like $50. Granted that was 16 years ago.

I miss mine, might pick another up.

I just took a look for that crate...I hate how everything that was "worthless" junk a decade or two ago, hell even 5 years, is now worth a ton because it's obscure or from some "cheap" beginner company. I think I got mine for $75 back in like 2004, it was pristine which is now listed as $200....now to be honest I feel like they're worth that from my memory of how they were, but damn.

I just took a look for that crate...I hate how everything that was "worthless" junk a decade or two ago, hell even 5 years, is now worth a ton because it's obscure or from some "cheap" beginner company. I think I got mine for $75 back in like 2004, it was pristine which is now listed as $200....now to be honest I feel like they're worth that from my memory of how they were, but damn.

Most of these things get to those prices because one or two airheads overprice and the others follow, and then they never sell

Well, and you've got to realize, the longer you go on, the more people want the few working examples of that item if it was formerly cheap, effective. I traded an Ibanez chorus pedal for my red/blue Super-Fuzz in the late 80's, and they go for $600 or so now. A few years later I bought a Silvertone 1484 (still have it, still my favorite guitar amp) for $125. The guy at the guitar show had a booth that must have had at least 25 of them. He said I could grab any one I wanted, and I grabbed the one I liked the most after trying about 10 of them. Still has the Silvertone branded RCA power tubes and two 12" Jensen blue frames. You could spend more than I spent on the amp on a set of those power tubes, easy.

Heck, I can remember when the HM-2 was considered this awful, nasty pedal Boss made that just about no-one wanted to buy.

Yes i'm aware of that, maybe it is more common in my country, but the vast majority of what i've seen hiking in price did so in the scenario i described. One example is this thing in the video below, nobody was rushing to buy these but all of a sudden they began to cost 3-4 times what they're selling for today

I don't think those are worth that anymore because there are a ton of low cost new guitar amps that sound really good. The Boss Katana combo new is only like $220 and that sounds pretty ridiculous. Not to mention you could get a micro dark terror or a used vox mv series and a used cab and be g2g for about the same price. You could get a headrush FRFR and use a preamp which you likely already own several no problem too.

On the synth/organ front. I just got the go ahead to order a Yamaha Reface YC-37 for my birthday. I'll probably just use my SH-201 to control it most of the time at home, but I might actually use the teeny keyboard live.

I own a Reface YC-37 you're absolutely going to love it. The keys on it are actually pretty decent, you'll be surprised.

I love new pedals but hate rewiring my board every time I add something. That said this fuzz is awesome. I’m not exactly sure what’s is based on but it’s definitely not a muff. The voltage starve isn’t pretty sweet makes it sound really glitchy and like velcro.

Finally found a drummer that’s interested in a project but he’s healing up from a broken foot. He will be out a bit longer which gives me a chance to find a guitarist too. Time to hunker down and start writing some more.

I haven't tried the katana, but you make a good point. I got a soft spot for that amp, which probably skews the value for me. Had a lot of character too and I didn't know it was stereo until after it was stolen. Gave me the impression of a knock off Roland jazz chorus with a early tube driven preamp channel. Is the katana stereo?

Gah, too much gear I'd want. I feel like pedals are the only thing I wouldn't feel bad about having more than half a dozen. Guitars and amps though....

Good! It's fun stuff, I haven't been using muff related things a ton lately but its still a lot of fun when you want to get some hairy muff sillyness going on.

In not stoner/doom news I have an audition with a dream pop thing tonight, not really my thing but they sent me charts and its kinda goofy fun to play so we'll see if it goes anywhere. I'd even be playing CLEAN. No fuzz, no distortion, doubt there'd even be any mild OD.

If this turns into something, well, send help.

my current band is like a shoegaze thing and I have plenty of opportunities for some dirt. A lot of times it works with a pretty fuzzed out delayed guitar.

That's a good point, I'll def see what I can work in and where, there are a couple songs that some light OD on the fretless worked well with, but we shall see. I'm going up against 2x guitars and a keyboard so if I get the gig I'll be keeping stuff simple as I can.

Right on. I’m able to make it work because we’re a trio. He does run stereo but that’s mostly delay and mod stuff. Jangly jazzmaster leaves quite a bit of space for me.

Stepping into a different fuzz area I’ve never been in. I just found an MXR Bass Sub Octave on Reverb and got it. Hoping it plays well with my jazz basses and GK stuff.
