True, not everyone is awake when he's working and ready to go.
I like it a lot. Of the guitars I've had in it's price range, it sounds and plays better than almost all of them. I'll probably swap the plastic nut for an aluminum one if Allparts ever gets them back in stock, but that's the only thing I'm likely to change on it.
In fact, I like how it sounds so much, I might try throwing a set of Danelectro style pots (1M tone, 100K volume) at the Squier VI to see if I like it any better with them. I might switch the pickups too, but I'm still planning on what to do with that one.

The Explorer shape is unusual in that it is an extraverted thing that speaks to me. I'm not usually aroused by extraverted things (or people).
Pretty much my take on the Iceman, actually. And I would LOVE an Iceman bass and guitar...
The Explorer shape was burned into my retina when I was a kid and had a Metallica poster that showed the band on the Justice tour, with Hetfield in all black and the white Explorer shaped guitar and the "more beer" sticker on it. The other guys were on the poster too, but that guitar always caught my eye. I was all about Metallica prior to the Black Album (still love that old stuff). I remember I copied all the lyrics of Shortest Straw by hand and had that on my wall too. I also have memories of going on family car rides and I'd just listen to my Justice tape over and over again on my Walkman (I'm really dating myself here).

This made me hit Google images to try and find it. I found several images that come close to your description, but none with the "more beer" text. But I see what you mean.
Lzzy Hale is the one that got me into the Explorer shape:
It was either this one or something very similar...it's been a LONG time.
I've never listened to her, and I'm not usually one for gold, but the gold pickguard and hardware really works with the white body there.
My sweetie got me a copy of Gluey Porch Treatments on glow in the dark vinyl for valentine's day and gave it to me early. While we listening to it she said "I always wanted all metal to sound like this." Damn, I love that lady. AJ Seemed to agree with her, and made sure he could hear it better.
I've just ordered a Darkglass Microtubes head (500 v2). This is going to be a loooong week and a deafening weekend for me. 
Ironically, those look strange to me. The Iceman, no. Fireman, yes. I don't get it either...
Non-reverse thunderbirds look weird to me but I guess the difference is more drastic than with ice/fire
Gibson once made a Non-Reverse Explorer. (Guitar of the month, September 2008.) But with typical Gibson logic, or lack thereof, they called it a "Reverse Explorer":

Good idea, and if you're not sure on pickup, don't be afraid to try guitar ones as well. I know Broncos and I believe musicmaster basses used guitar pickups. I've got a firebird in the neck position on my bass, sounds great. Really keeps up with the Ric treble pickup sitting in the pbass spot.
What @themarshall said too. Split in the middle and 2 buckers on either end. Or go crazy, bisonic at the neck, split middle, and MFD in the bridge? That'd be nuts but awesome too. Almost too awesome for one bass.

I have a new pickguard on order but I think the lead time is a couple months so I figured I'd see if I could make a usable one in the meantime. Turned out pretty good.
On tonight's episode of "THAT'S Been The Problem This WHOLE TIME!?!?!?!?" we have power supply issues. For the past 3ish (?) years I've had a random hum in one of my amps. Only one, and it would go away sporadically. Typically, if it showed up, it would show up within a few minutes of the amp being turned on and slowly get louder until the amp "popped", at which point the hum would be gone and the cycle would repeat.
I narrowed it down to the pedal board, and figured it was the power supply. After downsizing a bunch of other boards, I realized I had some extra power supplies and swapped them out. That solved it. Looking at the two power supplies, they were identical. So I thought more and more, and figured it out - the power supply was fine - but one of them had the extra lead of wire wrapped in a rubber band, and the other was wrapped in a metal twist tie. The metal twist tie had the noise. I swapped it with a rubber band, and the noise was gone! So far, after about 30 minutes of keeping everything on idling as I did other things, there was no new noise. For reference, while playing today the amp popped twice in about 15 minutes. So I'm hopeful it's all figure out now! I've always heard that coiling long wires can cause noise in the signal, but never seen it before. That's all I can think of that caused this issue - the coil of the wires and the wire tie being wrapped around all those coils must have caused the noise in a similar way. Odd - but it seems to be fine now, so I'm happy.
In other news, I'm loving the new practice routine. Got my calluses back, and am feeling much more confident in my playing. My wife even got me an Iron Maiden guitar tab book for V-Day! Time to get the bass one and get to work!
So far, I've got the following songs down in the past two weeks (all of which I had mostly learned in the past, but have now re-learned and tightened up). New songs to come in the next few weeks!

Creeping Death
Whiplash
For Whom The Bell Tolls

Black Sun
New songs coming up are going to be some Sabbath, Maiden, maybe Priest. We'll see. Probably finish up Seasons in the Abyss as well, since I've got that pretty much down already. Anyway, been a great few weeks, and my routine is working for me. I'm thinking I may spend my weekends learning the bulk of a new song, and then the following week focusing on tightening up the parts I'm struggling with. Hopefully it keeps me focused. Pumped!
