Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Checking out Bloodnstuff made me look at the other bands on Fuzzorama records and they have some of the big names and other good bands. But I could never find Asteroid on a regular bandcamp search and missed listening to them. Plus I am not set up to buy music till I get a new puter. But they are linked on the Fuzzorama page on bandcamp! Love that retro and heavy blend they do and all the use of octave pedals, down and up, by the guitarist! One of the bands that brought me to this genre and I still love them.
And yeah, next time you think your family is bad, just imagine you can be Lazarus.Bird where your father hasn't spoken to you in over half a decade and refused to come to your wedding mainly because the two of you just disagree on a lot of things.

Man crazy weather in Virginny. 36 in the morning, then got up to 60, then temp dropped fast, and now a torrential downpour is happening.

I noticed you are up in Fredericksburg. I am straight down 17 about 1:45/2:00hrs from you. I was wondering if there are any places to catch bands in this scene up your way.
Not really. Fredericksburg is more of a bluegrass/acoustic scene. Not much doom up here. I was in band called Pseudocide which was a catchall of industrial and doom/drone influences, and we were considered pretty weird (the link is in my signature). We do have a place called Q-Balls that gets alternative acts; they had Drowning Pool play there earlier this month, for whatever that is worth. Richmond is has a bigger doom scene, I know that much. I don't get out as much as I used to. I hope to catch Electric Wizard in Baltimore in April, tho.

There have been way to many snorefest albums this year. Everything sounds so regurgitated...Monolord I'm looking at you especially...what a shvtty album, did they even try to be original?
The only place I found in Richmond is Strange Matter so far, but lately it is all punk, alternative, and DJ shite, which is strange because I am pretty sure Windhand has something to do with the place. Hope they get more doom in. I guess they have to bring in the acts that fill the venue, but Weedeater brought a full house in that's for sure. Yep bluegrass here too.
Strange Matter, that's the place. They used to be more doom a few years ago. Pseudocide never got that big, we just played open mics and scared people who were expecting dave matthews covers or acoustic rock covers or bluegrass, and then we show up with our industrial doom drone noise and they didn't know how to react.
So we wound up playing to emptied houses, which was fine with us.
After a lot of considering it from every possible angle, I finally politely bowed out of playing with the death metal band I've been jamming with over the last two weeks. For a lot of reasons, but when I sat down and did the math that it would cost me $150 a month to put the bare minimum into doing the band, gas for the round trip once a week and my share of their practice space, it was enough to highlight that I didn't enjoy it enough to justify that. I'm just continuing on with trying to get my own stoner/doom centric band going. I'm mulling over my options to just get moving with it immediately and not waste so much time trying out people who flake all the time.
it actually sounds like moving will be your only option at this point, ha.
you could always start a one man studio band in the meantime.
That's the plan, the one man band thing I mean. People keep telling me I should move, but that's not really a sensible option. I'm the sole earner in our house, we have a newborn at home and I have a high school diploma. I make semi decent money because I've been doing the same job for 14 years and I'm an expert at it, but it's not an industry that's doing well overall around the country. We were thinking about making a move to the east coast a few years ago and the largest distributor in the country for the products I sell didn't have any job openings.
I do however own a nice drum kit, know how to play drums (though long out of practice), have recording gear and a free practice space. I could waste another six months trying out people who don't want to play this music or don't have any intention of doing a real band...or I could practice drums for six months and write songs.

Oh, this conversation has long passed but Asteroid reminded me. That Asteroid album is 56 SEK ($7 something USD), for 11 tracks and a longer running time than that Ocean Chief album, which is twice the price or slightly more. I still love both bands, but it wasn't just the exchange rate, OC's digital downloads are just crazy expensive.

Also, what is this Ocean Chief you speak of? I have not heard of them.
I've told my wife I'd consider moving if she got a good job opportunity somewhere and we could sell our house and not lose money. I'm serious too, I've flown across country with her to interview before. She's way more career minded than me historically, I just work to make money to pay bills and play music. Though if I could make money woodworking again, I would. The demand just kind of dried up eventually, that's what I used to do at THIS job, now I do sales. At any rate the wife is taking care of our kid full time right now and I'm busting my butt just trying to keep making money at the job I have now and keep health insurance.
I could still meet a cool drummer who isn't a flake any day and start a band. It hasn't happened yet, but it COULD.
