Stoner Rock: I like it a lot but...

No. The name only came about because it was made by and somewhat appealed to those on the Herb, or other substances. People who do not use the herb or other substances can like it as well, it's just that's how it came about, IMHO.

in my own research, that stuff is quite nice to listen to while, uh, you know...:hiding:

You haven't really listened to Sleep until you've listened to it altered.
Trust me, I bought Dopesmoker years before I tried any sort of drug...

That said, it's a terrible genre name, and one I roundly reject. After all, if you want to call it stoner rock, then stoner rock has been around since the 30's, when jazz musicians would get blazed and play.

I don't really plan on hearing it altered :hmm:

Fair 'nuff, I'm just letting you know. For what its worth, Holy Mountain is one of my "desert island" albums, and I listen to it clean all the time. Same with all music, really. It's not better or worse, its just different.

But to quote Al Cisneros, "If music's good, then hearing that same good music stoned might make it even more enjoyable."

There certainly is an opposition to the name, I guess we can blame Sleep for the title. It's a genre you feel cheesy for addressing it by it's name. It's a shame a more creative title hasn't stuck, I know I log into stonerrock.com as fuzzrock.com. So, I guess you can call it fuzz rock, being an almost as cheesy title.

I dig it though.

um, i know plenty of people who like it without being altered, but i'm in the altered camp myself although i dug monster magnet and sabbath and fu manchu before i started altering myself. it's like a lot of people like trance music sans disco biscuits, but those who do like to do the occasional pacman impression claim it enhances the music no end. your body, your choice. just don't listen to trance music. :ninja:

for some reason i go through extremes, where at points i'll hate weed and then later i'll love it. but no matter what, i really don't like being "altered" when i'm around people. it makes me feel dumb.

but listening to music is a lot of fun. it makes it a lot easier to pick out every little noise, and the music seems to be a lot more moving and exciting. but really, you can get the same feelings if you just concentrate enough. it just makes it easier when you smoke, i guess.

that being said, i love stoner rock, and all that experimental stuff is also really cool when you're under the influence. my favorite albums to listen to "altered" or not, are Galapagos Momentum by Upsilon Acrux, and Andorra by Caribou. Really really good stuff, whether you do drugs or not.

being in the wilderness is great though, especially this time of year.

I'm no stoner. Do you think you have to be a "stoner" to like stoner rock? My favorites are: Kyuss, Sleep (my favorite of all), Clutch, Orange Goblin.

Also, would Porcupine Tree count? I love Up the Downstairs.

Yes.

You are a poseur if you don't smoke weed.

Everyone's doing it.

You want your friends to think you are cool, right?

Right?

I talked to Matt Pike the other day. He says he doesn't want people who don't smoke weed listening to his band.

For reals.

If you don't like smoking weed that's understandable. But folks who actually enjoy stoner rock really owe it to themselves to eat a nice brownie or something. here are lots of ways to alter your consciousness and I respect a person's choices. But if you already enjoy stoner rock, there is a 95% chance you would enjoy cannabis. Just sayin'!
