Stoner rock / metal fuzz

You DEF need a muff. This is like a must. I would suggest an old school EHX Sovtek Green Russian. If you cant swing that, go for the Abominable Hail Satan or the Stomp Under Foot Civil Unrest. Those are both awesome sounding doomy type muffs, both modeled after the Greenie, and both are great in the mix. The Big Game EAND is also a really nice doomy muff. Very aggressive. The Black Sheep by Black Arts Toneworks is VERY stoner and doomy too IMO. Out of all the ones I just named actually, the Black Sheep is most likely the one I would pick for "doom" or "stoner" rock especially.

I was just thinking it may give the fuzz / wah a bit more bite and body.

I ask because it looks like I'm getting a used b3k tomorrow for trade .

I'd say not a good idea, but only based on academics, not empirical evidence. The B3K has a known EQ dip in the upper mids, which can't be removed. Most fuzzes are notorious for having a mid-suck, also. Combining the two would compound the issue. I'm thinking you'd end up with a decent bedroom tone, but you'd fall out of a real mix.

Interesting you mention the Black Sheep by Black Arts, but not the Pharaoh or Pharaoh Supreme. The Supreme was on my radar for a bit, before I went TFR.

I've got a SA Aftershock on the way. I'm hoping the fuzz can do justice to a green doom sound. Perhaps I'll know this weekend :)

I wouldn't recommend stacking stuff. You start stacking fuzzes it'll be a compressed sinkhole of a mess. If anything get a tone shaper after the fuzz like a B7K/ultra to help it pierce through a little more.

While I dig the doom/stoner sound, I wouldn't want to replicate it playing it. It's just super fuzzed out low end with no real definition most times. Droning chords and stuff. Most times anyway. But it's all how you sey stuff and what else you use with it that'll get you where you want to be.

Also, check out the megalith mountainking. You don't get much more doomy and massive than that.

I may have before I tired a clone of the black sheep. I've had a pharaoh supreme too. And while it would be great for some stoner doom stuff, the black sheep excels in that arena. It's got that fullness and has a darker tone to it. It's not really a "dark" pedal per say, but it has the characteristics of it. If that makes sense.

...almost forgot the W&C Elephant Skin. If the TFR is the sound you like, it offers it with a bonus boost. I'm not a huge Mastodon fan, but you gotta respect a player like Troy Sanders when he says he wants an as-is TFR as his sound, just with an additional boost button for kicking things up a notch at times. i'm a little curious how that extra gain stage sounds since it can be engaged independently from the TFR circuit.

So off topic. What do you think of the trade? My VMT for a b3k. I love the VMT, but my ear is changing. It's hard to explain. For overdriven tone I'm wanting something more aggressive and not dark.

I'm not a fan of either pedal but preferred the VMT for mid content. It's hard to argue the B3K popularity, so it must work for many users. It's certainly more aggressive and not as dark than the VMT. Many other pedals fall into the OCD clone overdrive camp or the Rat clone distortion camp. I'm going with the SA Aftershock because of the potential for flexibility (I like its DGlass sound better than the real thing in the demos I've heard). I'd say you're more likely to find what you want with a Rat clone than an OCD. Another route that's midway between a Rat and B3K (to my ears) would be the Aguilar Agro, though I wish it had a bit more bottom at lower gain settings. There's also the HM-2 clone world. It isn't terribly bass popular, and it is a touch more Black Metal than Doom.

Doomy fuzz, eh? I'd say a Pharaoh Supreme. Incredibly versatile, couldn't imagine not finding your sounds that box. Plenty of other great suggestions, too. If you want higher frequency fuzz, I would say the Supercollider. Swollen Pickle is also solid and can be had on a tighter budget. It's my second favorite fuzz after the Pharaoh Supreme.

I know you asked for fuzz, but you would also be surprised at what an overdrive can do with doom. I love the Pork Loin for doom as well as the Pharaoh Supreme. Depends on what flavor of doom I need. Just something to think about.

Speaking of Blackarts and doom, Matt Pike has a signature pedal coming out from BAT called the Rabid Mammal. Sounds gnarly, no clue if it's any good on bass, though as it's not released yet.

Im looking into the Shift Line Termofuzz for that kind of stuff and have pretty much decided on it but I havent bought it yet. What I particulary like about it is the crazier sounds you can get out of it (you can get regular fuzz too)

The Termofuzz is such a great pedal. I have 7-8 fuzz pedals right now and that one is possibly my favorite. It's just so unique and sounds great no matter how crazy you set it. It's a desert island fuzz if I ever met one.

look no further

The Pickle seems to be one of those pedals that people either love or just can't get to work for their sound. The reason being the EXTREME amount of low end it puts out. I mean like a semi truck load of lows. I've found that it's completely unusable for guitar because of that and some people don't like it on bass either. I love the sound of it, but it definitely has it's place. The way it distorts a low B can rattle walls.

To me that genre screams "muff".

Yes. +howevermany on muffs and clones/derivatives thereof. Great for the genre and there are a crap load of options of which particular pedal to get for that sound. It may require some research to narrow down just what you want. Tall font, bubble font, or black Sovtek Big Muff, EQD Hoof, Abominable Electronics Hail Satan, GR Hail Satan, and Hail Satan Deluxe, Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh and Pharaoh Supreme, Vick Black Russian, Stomp Under Foot Civil Unrest, Earthbound Audio Supercollider, '71 Supercollider, and Beast, Solid Gold Electronics Imperial, etc. etc. etc.

The Duality sucks for that kind of thing IMO. I'd look at a muff or Megalith.

The Megalith is also a very very good choice. It's got the most saturation out of any other pedal I've heard and absolutely nails the doom tone. Unfortunately, the original Mountainking ones are rare and super expensive, but you may find one used or a good clone of one. If you google search "megalith clone" you may get a a Reverb.com listing in your results. That's how I found mine.

I also noticed someone (forgot to quote him) mentioned the Earthbound Audio Pale Mare. I'd put that somewhere in the same league with the Megalith in terms of insane amounts of saturation, although the circuits are totally different and the Pale Mare can get even crazier because of its noise gate (which you can decide to use or not - it has a switch). The gate makes it sound more synthy, but without it engaged, the thing just puts out a ridiculous amount of searing fuzz.

And just for reference, muffs are more smooth sounding than the other pedals I mentioned (except for the Swollen Pickle which is a highly modified muff circuit). Muffs can be described as sounding "creamy" as opposed to the more "searing" fuzz you'd get from a Pale Mare or Megalith.
