If you want a Muff style fuzz that works great for this genre and is really flexible, try the Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie B. It's one of the few modded Muffs I've played on which both the gain and tone knob are useful all the way around the sweep and it has a built in blend, which quite honestly I don't even think is necessary for a good tone. It doesn't have a separate mid knob, but it's not extremely mid scooped and I've never needed one.

If you want something more on the thick overdrive/distortion side, I highly recommend a Joyo Ultimate Drive. They're cheap, easy to get and sound great for really heavy, dark tones.

There are a lot of great boutique fuzz, overdrive and distortion pedals that sound great for this style, depending on what kind of tone you're going for, the overall band mix and your budget. These are just two easy to find pedals I've had a lot of experience with. I don't currently own the Pickle Pie B anymore, but I would buy it again in a heartbeat. My bass tone on the Warp Rig demo that's linked below is about half that pedal. I was using a dual rig setup with that on one and a Dunwich Wizard Fuzz on the other. I currently use a custom Dunwich Cthulhu Fuzz Deluxe when I want a good fuzz for downtuned stoner/doom type tones, but like I said there's a lot of good stuff out there and definitely more than one way to get a good tone for these styles.

Also, I don't drink or smoke anything either, you can still like any kind of music despite whatever people want to call it. Lots of "stoner rock" and "stoner metal" style bands that don't really have anything to do with being a stoner.

Not as high quality of a recording, but in case you're curious about the tones with a loud tube amp instead of solid state, here's a clip that has the Joyo and the Dunwich CFD, along with a Boss ODB-3 (good reference point for known tone, I think) into my custom 300W tube head and an Ampeg 810e.

There are a TON of great fuzzes out there that will give you that sound. But the green Russian in one form or the other is the one of a couple fuzzes that you will almost always find on a stoner/doom board for fuzz. It just has that sound with a super thick and full bottom. I personally love it too. But I have had more luck in my bands mix with the civil unrest (a civil war muff clone), the EAND (green Russian platform), the hail satan and the dizzy tone. The carcosa is a newer edition for me but is quickly becoming a fav of mine. It can easily cop those doomy tones. And MUCH much more.

Yeah lots of people build the Acapulco Gold w/ gain and tone controls. It is a super simple circuit and a great first build.

well today I was using a TAFM (older one with bias instead of gate control) into a Wounded Paw Attack Goat (both fuzzes blend very well, Attack Goat adds upper frequencies only and lets TAFM through) into a VT bass for eq boost, and double stop chords sustained forever with all frequencies of fuzz and clean low end. I really don't think guitar is necessary added to this.

Digitech X-Series Bass Driver. For live performance you can get anything between SVT Growl to RAT to OBD-3 to full on crazy Fuzz. I used one for years until I switched to mini pedals. I've got one for sale over in the classifieds if you want it.

Here are a few quick clips of some of the fuzz pedals I use for doom. I used the same pedal on bass & guitar in all of these. I did these super quick so don't fret too much about quality and whatnot.

Fun thread to read. My suggested stoner rock/doom fuzz pedals would be:

Vick Audio Black Russian (mids boost toggle switch is nice)
Earthquaker Devices Acapulco Gold (super loud boost, sounds great in front of fuzz)
Blackout Effectors Musket v2 (another mids booster of a pedal)
Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder (crazy mids boost when the Toneblast is engaged)

I used to play trough a Russian Muff Clone an a VT Bass, great combo.

I use a Sovtek green muff pi into a zvex Mastotron. The muff is set to a dark tone, sustain at about ten. The Mastotron is dialed in to a really "small", gated sound, but with subs at 3. Combined, the sound is huge! And quiet between notes because of the mastotron.

Im looking into the Shift Line Termofuzz for that kind of stuff and have pretty much decided on it but I havent bought it yet. What I particulary like about it is the crazier sounds you can get out of it (you can get regular fuzz too)

The thing about stoner bass is, it still has to cut IMO. That's why I've settled on a rat derivative and use a blend. I've tried many muff based pedals... it will be interesting (and fun) to see how the wizard fuzz fits into my space doom band.

Wampler mod ODB3 works really good with my setup. Precision bass, hiwatt dr201 clone, 8x10 and that odb3. Uuhhh....

i have tried a lot of fuzzes. this one (Shiftline Termofuzz) was a big disappointment for me. Crappy quality and its tone - good for guitar, but muddy for bass, low end loss. i hope that is enough.

Muddy and low end loss? That sounds contradictory. Regardless Im still going to take my chances with it, since ,like I said, this is the first negative comment Ive seen about it and I really like the what Ive heard on PedalsAndEffects and the whole concept of super experimental fuzz tones
