STR basses

Just picked this up from Brian at The Low End. It's super comfortable and the tone is amazing. Definitely the most comfortable and well balanced 6 I've played. I've owned quite a few basses and I'd highly highly recommend these. The specs are:

Ash body
Japanese Ebony top
flame maple board
single coil STR jazz pickups
Aguilar 3 band
34"scale

it's pretty thin, not chunky at all, and extremely comfortable

I don't have any recording software. Tonally it falls into the modern jazz bass realm.

Anyone played both STR and LEJ ? and how would compare vs. a Lg-5 from alleva coppolo ?

I'm rationalizing my bass collection now, and I want to add an other jazz, my end state should look like:

Fender MIA deluxe 5 (with Audere and Nordies single coil)
Fender P5
Benavente SCD5 (on the way)
New Jazz I'm looking for here now...

As far as the STR, I can only judge the look now and I'm in love with Link Removed but in 5 strings setup, and with a Mid Frew switch as well...

I did a trade. I believe Brian said this 6 was selling for $2600.00 which, having owned what I've owned, is the steal of the century.

Yeah I owned a Benavente SCD5 for over a year and I got rid of it and I've been thinking of getting a boutique again but I didn't know what the STR were going for.

How does it compare to a Bennie tonally and playability wise?

It sure is visually stunning!

tonally and playability wise it's right up there with the Benavente stuff... although I don't think I've had a Benavente with the 60's jazz spacing so it's kind of a different animal than Chris' usual stuff like the single cut and Vortex models. Tonally speaking, it's very much in the Sadowsky/Nordy modern jazz vein.

For those who don't know, these basses are made by Deviser Special Division in Japan. Deviser is the company behind Bacchus.

yep, these are made by a few of the guys at Deviser, the STR is basically their boutique/custom line...here's a blurb from The Low End page...

"Wood working of STR is only done by the chief/master builder, Satoru Yatsuzuka. The name STR derrives from his name SaToRu. Thinks like sanding, finishing and setup are done by each section's most skilled people. No CNC involved. The main tools are pin routers and shapers. You can find more information on Satoru here."

The LEJs are a 70s string spacing and the AC and STR are 60s string spacing. That makes up a huge difference sonically.

It was my first 6 and I loved it so much.

The constuction quality was top notch , flawless.
It was very playable although the sixth string got in my way a couple of times
The neck is thin and flat, I like it like that, it resulted very confortable to my hands.
Sonically I liked it a lot, yes, probably sadowsky is what it sounded like to my ear , very very nice indeed... so much I'm thinking of one !

I'm the dealer who just sold the above 6 string bass #136. My customer is happily gigging with it now as I'm typing this thread.

I'm really happy that STR basses are finally getting some recognition in the US. I'm a Bacchus and STR dealer from Singapore and I've been trying to promote these brands in Singapore for the last few months. Singapore, like many other Asian countries, is highly brand-conscious when it comes to musical instruments and they just could not see beyond the logos on the headstocks. Sad to say, many US made custom basses are getting more and more out of reach for most musicians (too bad quality and innovation cannot increase as fast as the price). When I first tried a STR bass in Tokyo, I was completely blown away by it's tone and quality. The guys at STR/Deviser are really passionate about waht they are doing and they have no intention to "rip people off" The prices for these instruments are more than reasonable.

Yes, I could be saying these words because I'm a dealer. However, I still think that luthiers who are sincere in their committment to build beautiful instruments that are still affordable for most peopl to enjoy should receive the recognition that they deserve.
