A davit is a small crane attached to a boat.

I would call it an indexing hole.

Any bass made before 1964 would be wise to get a colonoscopy at such an advanced age. That's what the hole is for.

Why not plug it with a wood plug and paint over it?

And call it a pickguard so they'll think it wasn't to cover cheap manufacturing processes but actually have another purpose.

Clearly many people here don't understand mass production and CNC machining...

Dude, I'm an industrial designer and believe me I do get all that stuff but it doesn't change the facts. It could have been required at the time, long long ago but not anymore! No excuses now if a $200 guitar can be made with no such parts to cover "traditional" necessities. If it is an aesthetic preference by the user, no argument there but the reason the pickguard exists doesn't change.
