strange pairing of ampeg cabs.

Greetings Talkbass community! i have searched and searched and am unable find any solid answer on this anywhere. I found one thread where this was brought up and it was very inconclusive. Basically, i am interested in pairing a ampeg 410HE with a 210AV cab. These will be powered by an SVT cl. The svt cl runs in either 2 ohm or 4 ohm, so unfortonunately i cannot run the 8ohm 410he by itself. but by pairing it with a 8ohm 210av it would create a 4ohm load. Now the problem is i heard these two will have a volume misatch? Does that simply mean the 410 will be louder? Is there some risk of damage with this setup? and what would be the ideal way to hook these cabs together if at all? or would i just be better off with 2, 210av's? I am really going for the 810e tone without the size and weight.

Sorry if this requires a complicated answer, any advice or direction of info would be greatly appreciated!

Oh and i currently have a 410hlf which i am learning to detest greatly in case you were gonna recommend that and am not at all interested in 610hlf.

The individual speaker in your 2X10 will be getting double the wattage of the speakers in your 4X10.

Your system will be limited to 2X the wattage rating of the 2X10, and may not get that much louder then running a 4X10 by itself.

Im sorry i think i follow what your saying but am not sure. So your saying this system would have a power handling of 2 times the single 2x10? giving me a total of 400w rms? If so then it would handle the 300w svt cl just fine correct? even still it does make it sound like a waste of the 410's potential and not a very ideal setup.

No, it's not at all ideal. The 410he is a great cab, and ideally, two of them would be perfect. But, be careful with the cab's "ratings. Fact is, even at 300 watts, that SVT could rip the little 210AV to shreds. What you propose will work, but the 410 will be limited in output by the smaller cab, which will be getting pounded, while the bigger cab is hardly sweating.

Since they are both 8 ohm cabs, they will be getting sent equal power. In these cases, your system is limited to 2X the rating of your lowest rated cab.

Asking a question first is wise. Asking about something you are not sure about will never be looked at as you making a fool of yourself!! That comes with doing and NOT asking!!

If you don't want the 8x10 size, look into either a 6x10, or perhaps a 4x12. There should be sealed versions of both available (though not necesarrily Ampeg), which will get you in the ballpark of the old SVT cabs, though not quite as absurdly heavy

I would check out the 212av cabs and maybe stack those. But as the owner of an 810e, other than stairs its pretty easy to move.

Your idea of the 810e is a good one. A second 410he is also a good one if you don't mind the deadlifting involved in toting them around, but I find the 810e an easier move unless there's a lot of stairs, as Jellin says. I love the 210av's and use them all the time, and have used them with an SVT before to great effect, but since I got the 100w V4B, that's what I use them with. With an SVT, you definitely have to watch the volume knob because they're only meant for medium duty.

Not more than the 410he. The 410he uses the 810e speakers so it's very close. The 410hlf goes way lower than the 810e, though.

I find that when I run my 210AVs with a little extra bump of the Bass knob it gets them a little closer to the 810e vibe. Does not have the wallop of the 810 but sounds pretty darn good!

I actually run the 410He and the 210AV together on occasion, but I power them with an 800RB so I can adjust the power level to each independently and keep the little cab from bursting. It's still not ideal, because the 410he is a little dark to my ear, and the 210av is slightly lacking in the lows.
I actually am trying to figure out what to do about it now- I like my 210AV, and use it for rehearsals, and I like my 410HE, and use it on gigs. But the 410 is big and awkward and tough to hear when you stand close to it on small stages.
Maybe another 210AV would be the ticket if we (I and the OP) are looking for more volume and better stage audibility?
Maybe I need another 410 for bigger gigs, too!

You could tilt your 410 back. I do that with mine sometimes.

I run my SVT CL thru a 4x10 hlf, which is 4ohms...or if I want to go big time,I bring in the 8x10 monster on its own....then thats 4 ohms too...two 8 ohm cabs should give you 4 ohms total..still ok....or two 4ohm cabs equals 2 ohms total...have to switch to the that on back of the head.

I played through a friends rig at a how one night. It was a sealed Edan 410 and a ported 210 on top. He was using a GK 700RB head. It was one of the best sounded rigs Ive ever played though. Im sure in this venue even with no PA support the 410 or even the 210 would have carried the room with no issue but before making up your mind try it and see if you like it. Just remember the 210 will blow if you dont listen for it

Alright well just an update, i have decided i am going to man up and pick up an 810e. I love the 810e tone and from what it seems, theres only one way to truly get that sound... its with an 810e Theres a pretty nice one in my area going for 500 that im gonna check out tommorow and hopefully take it home! i guess i should also do a mini review of the 210av, i went to my local samash and compaired a pair of 210av's with an 810e and must say they are close but to my ears the 810 punched better, went lower and had a bit more even response along with an overall fullness in tone. The 210av's had a good amount more mids along with less bass. Though with a lil eq to boost the bass and cut the mids at 800 the 210av could get damn close to the 810e's tone. Though even with the bass boosted it still didnt seem to have the same low end as the 810e, maybe ampeg's exagerating in there listed response, idk. in a full mix it might be difficult to distinguish the two but the 810 just has that extra something that sets it apart in my opinion and makes it worth the ridiculous size and weight thank you everyone for the awesome reply's
