Strange sound when pulling off?

I know, I know...

But anyways, after setting up my bass, I get a weird clashing tone, almost like it's sounding two adjacent semitones, when doing a pull-off from the 9th to the 8th or 7th frets on the G-string. It doesn't happen anywhere else.

What gives? It didn't do this before.

Try damping the string below the 7th fret - anywhere from fret 6 to 1. Let me know if that stops the problem.

Nope. Doesn't make any difference. Could it be an action thing, or a tall fret? It doesn't do it as much in a pull-off, but a slide down from the 9th to 7th frets makes all kinds of extra clashing tones.

Ok, so we know it's not back buzz. It could be sympathetic vibration of some component on the bass, unlevel frets or a setup issue. Perhaps someone else here has another idea.

that happens to me there on that string only because the side of my finger catches the string

I raised the action slightly, and the problem went away. I reckon it was a tall fret.
