Strangest celebrity encounter you've had?

I ran into a guy who I've known for 20 years or so- he does a lot of promotion, used to run a club or two... at the time he was managing Dustin Diamond. Dustin happened to be in the bar- I met him and stuff then Jack got Dustin to sign an 8x10. My name is Dave, so he signed it "Dave, Dustin Diamond." But being pretty liquored up, his first "D" looked more like an L, and the a- it looked like an O.

So for a while I had an 8x10 that said "Love, Dustin Diamond."

Ok, I've got a Screech story..

I stumbled upon my first Ibanez AFR-104 at GC in Brea, CA, on the used gear rack.. love at first sight.. fondled it for a good half hour before deciding to buy my beloved bass, so i set it down and walk over to the counter and pay for it. then i turn around and discover that Screech had grabbed MY NEW BASS and was headed towards the register!!! I was so ready thrown down, but he was nice enough to hand the bass over once he realized i had just bought it.

Just what the title says. Funny, weird or whatever.

I've got a couple but I thought I'd start off with the story from my drummer that prompted this thread.

About five years ago, my drummer, his girlfriend and his parents were in Las Vegas for a weekend. On Saturday he and his Dad decide to go see Bruce Willis And the Accelerators (don't ask me, I mock him regularly for this) and are enjoying the show but they keep noticing this skinny guy with a mohawk running around the stage. He's getting water, he's taking pictures, he's talking to Bruce between songs etc. A bit strange, but whatever.

After the show my drummer and his dad have a late night dinner in one of the casino steak houses. While eating they spot this same guy walking with three or four women and a couple dudes. So my drummer flags him down and says, "hey we saw you at the show. You looked a bit out of place, are you a roadie?". The guy says no, that he's a friend of Bruce's and helps him out a bit when he's in town, but actually he's a musician himself, a drummer. My drummer says he is too and they talk a bit. Finally, my drummer asks what kind of band he plays in. He responds, "we sound a lot like Blink 182." My drummer makes a weird face and then says, "oh, I don't know if you want to sound like them. I think their music sucks."

Mr. Mohawk (who is of course actually Travis Barker from Blink 182) leans in and says, "I make more money than you'll ever dream of" and walks away with his hangers on.

Pretty much exactly the douche like response I would have expected.

Seemed warranted...you're drummer is actually the one who comes off kinda "douche-like".

'You're band sucks."

"Yeah, but I'm loaded."

It wasn't an unusual meeting, but I took the guitarist that the singer from our band up to see Gov't Mule this past Wednesday night. They are only 19 and haven't been to a lot of shows. It was a great concert, and I got them back to visit with Warren Haynes afterwards. He was really nice, spent some time with them, made them feel special. It gave me a little extra respect for him, taking the time after a long show to visit with a couple of aspiring young musicians, shaking their hands, giving them autographs and advice, etc. The guitarist got a Warren Haynes pick, the the singer got a setlist, so they were both really pumped.

BTW, if you get the chance to see the Mule on this tour, do it. Andy Hess is their new bassist, and he did a fine job.

He certainly can be, which is why he and I have had trouble getting along at times. To be clear, he didn't know who Travis Barker was at the time. It wasn't until a couple weeks later when he saw him on TV that he put it all together.

Still, it was a bit of a clash of the douches.

I still don't see what made Travis Barker an AH. He had a right ti defend himself.

I've got quite a few. Celebrity to me might not be celebrity to others. I've met and worked with lot of writers from the Simpsons (these are names that you see on the credits). Two of my bosses were writers from the Simpsons and one of my bosses was a cat named Howard Gordon. Nice guy. We got drunk together on a few occasions. Howard Gordon is best known for creating the show 24, but he also created the show Charmed, and Angel. He also wrote most of the x-files episodes in the middle years. He's a self-proclaimed whore, but he once told me that the best way to make money is whoring yourself on your back. I've been trying to take that advice to heart ever since. ;)

Same job I also went surfing with the creative director for King of the Hill and he got angry at me for laughing at him when he got his a$$ handed to him paddling out through some pretty large waves. I met Tom Hanks surfing once too. I paddled out at Topanga (a right hand point break). I wouldn't have noticed him if he wasn't kooking out so much. I remember there was this dude with brand new gear just kooking hard. He did finally get a wave and as he paddled next to me I gave him the obligatory good vibe "Nice wave dude". Then I noticed that this "dude" was Tom Hanks. He looks at me with the classic Tom Hanks furrowed brow, and give me a nice sarcastic "Thanks. As soon as I figure it out, I'm turning pro." I've also seen Jack Johnson in the water, Kelly Slater (8 time world champ), met Tom Curren, Martin Potter, Andy Irons, all these guys have been world champ surfers (most people won't know who they are).

Rick Fox and Derek Fisher, a couple of my favorite Lakers showed up to my old company's launch party. They were really nice guys. I bought them each a beer. Later in the evening a beer appeared in my hand, and I look up and they raised their glasses to me as a "thanks".

I worked for Carsey Werner so I used to work with the actors from 3rd Rock From the Sun and That Seventies Show too. Jane Curtin was a nice person to chill with. She always had funny stories to tell.

I've met Matt Groening too. Ordered a Stewart longboard for South Park's Matt and Trey. They did some work on a show of ours but couldn't take payment or put their names on the credits for contractual reasons. Delivered it to them and too a picture with them (I've long since lost it though).

I'm sure there's more. But I've forgotten as many as I remember.

I was visiting NYC and my wife and I went to an Italian Restaurant that we were told was great. I went to the restroom and when I came back my wife says "Who is that guy? Someone was trying to get an autograph." I looked over at the table beside us and it was Joe DiMaggio. I just said "Hi" and kept on eating figured he gets pestered enough.

Back around the year of our Lord 1985, I had a crappy job at a gas station. Who walks in to pay for his gas but Mr. Tommy DeBarge of the band DeBarge. I grew up on the SE side of Grand Rapids, and was in school with Chico, and my brother went to school with Eldra before that. No big deal, I kinda know these guys right??

So Tommy walks in to pay for his gas. He says "How are you?". I say "I'm OK." He says "Do you know who I am??" I say "no." He says "I'm Tommy DeBarge!! From Debarge!!" I said "How's it goin man?" He repeats a little louder "I'M TOMMY DeBARGE!! FROM DeBARGE!!" I said "Yeah, I went to school with your brother Chico. How you doin??"

I'm not exactly sure where the conversation went after that, but sheesh! Now granted, I think this was a few years before the big cocaine bust, and in retrospect that may account for his exuberance, but c'mon! Do you know who I am?? Seriously??

I have one more "double" encounter. I was in NYC for a trade show back in the early 80's. I went to Trader Vic's for dinner. As I was going in, Rod Stewart was coming out. He looked pretty well soused, and of course, he had some blond supermodel type on his arm. :D
When we were seated, I realized that the great Itzhak Perlman was at the next table having dinner with his family. Like a previous poster, I thought he was getting bothered enough, so I never said anything to him.
